We have a 1hr 55m layover between Istanbul & Antalya, have never done a flight with a layover before and after looking online now
worried it won’t be enough time!

also does anyone know if we are allowed to travel with battery packs? Either in hand or hold luggage

No experience of a lay over flight either, battery packs are fine though for either hold or cabin

Bizarred · 08/11/2024 20:56

Which Istanbul airport is it? Ataturk or Sabiha Gokcen?

Battery packs can't go in the hold. They need to be in your carry on bags.

I went through Istanbul airport about two weeks ago, Vietnam to Istanbul to Ireland, had a 2 hour lay over. Got to my gate in plenty of time. It's an easy airport to navigate and security check was quite quick.

Edit: it was the new airport in Istanbul, I forget what it's called, sorry.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 08/11/2024 21:01

No idea, but cabin bag only for battery packs. Not sure of the science behind it (or may have been a fluke) but I was travelling back to back a few months ago, and must have left a powerbank in my suitcase with a USB lead in it (not turned on) - lead was fried by the time I made it to the US and powerbank didn't work again. Spent the whole trip worried it would've flagged somewhere and I'd have issues with my return flight 😂

MrsHamlet · 08/11/2024 21:02

It'll be fine if the inbound flight is on time. If not, it's a bloody long run from one side of the airport to the other.

DuesToTheDirt · 08/11/2024 21:04

Istanbul IST is massive. We had a 1h15 transfer there last year and I was majorly stressed, but it was fine, helped by having a 2 minute walk between the flights, hand luggage only (which included battery packs), and an on-time arrival. That is the great unknown of course.

Both inbound and onward were international flights, but strangely there was no customs or passport control on the way out but there was on the way back. Perhaps it depends on the country you start in, and whether Turkey considers their procedures to be rigorous enough. Won't be an issue for you anyway, with the second flight internal.

I don’t know it just says IST on the booking?

Also make sure have any vital stuff in your hand luggage in case you make the flight but your bags don't. Bitter experience.

Yes, it was IST that I went through and it was fine in that timeframe. Just get off your inbound flight and go straight for your next gate, no dilly dallying and when you get to the gate you can get refreshments, have toilet breaks then. I travel quite a bit for work and this is what I always do. I found IST quite easy to get around, Heathrow and Charles De Gaulle in Paris are the worst. If your inbound flight is late ask the flight crew if they can help in any way and be prepared to leg it! If it's a late arrival don't be afraid to ask people in the queue to leave the plane and in the security queue if you can move past them as you have a tight connection. The vast majority of people are understanding in that situation.

100%. I always pack my carry on with essentials such as medications, chargers, etc and a change of clothes in case my check in luggage is delayed .

A change of clothes wasn't enough for the 6 days I was without mine this summer :( But it was a short layover, long delay and unusual flight combo.

Do not put lithium-ion batteries in the hold, ever. Certainly not if I'm getting on the same plane. The aviation industry has already lost at least one plane (cargo) to a lithium battery fire and it's probably only a matter of time until another is lost. Some airports' luggage scanners now detect these batteries and your bag might not make it on board.

Ouch, that sounds horrendous! I've been fairly lucky in that I've only had a day's delay with luggage. My business takes me to Asia a couple of times a year and, as a lady on the larger side it's my worst nightmare to be stranded there without clothes as Asian women are generally petite. I console myself by at least having access to spare underwear and access to a hotel laundry service if I really needed it!!

IST is Ataturk. SAW is Sabiha Gokcen. (Both considered to be Istanbul, like London Heathrow and London Gatwick are both 'London').

1hr 55 will be fine. It's a long airport, lots of walking, but you will be fine.

Yes, the reason battery packs shouldn't go in the hold is precisely because of what happened to @LittleRedRidingHoody's - they can catch on fire, and the last thing you want is a fire spreading in the hold! If they're going to catch on fire, it's better that they're in the cabin where you can see them and put the fire out!

TizerorFizz · 08/11/2024 23:39

If the flight out is delayed it’s not enough! Will be stressful.
