Feb half term - snow but not skiing

Any advice on city breaks from London that would have snow please? Looking for something easy to navigate but that isn't a ski destination hub.

Thank you

Definitely Helsinki. A properly fun place, and not designed around skiing.

frodopharma · 07/11/2024 20:11

Stockholm and Lulea.

We are going to Iceland

If you want guaranteed snow on a city break for half term, I honestly think you're going to have to head for the US or Canada.

TizerorFizz · 08/11/2024 18:46

Some of those cities are not guaranteed snow. Certainly not ones by the sea and at lower levels. That’s why ski resorts are in mountains and higher.

GingerBeverage · 08/11/2024 19:10

Not keen to go to ski hub when we don’t ski, but any other suggestions welcome, thank you.

@TizerorFizz That’s why ski resorts are in mountains and higher

Curious - what's higher than a mountain ?

TizerorFizz · 08/11/2024 20:10

@cyclingmum67 Stockholm is at sea level. Ditto Reykjavik and snow is not guaranteed at airport cities in the Alps, eg Geneva, Saltzburg and Innsbruck. That’s why I said you had to go higher into the mountains. It’s the same for Vancouver - snow at Whistler but not Vancouver. The problem is, where there’s snow, there are ski resorts.

cyclingmum67 · 08/11/2024 20:17

Dodging the question @TizerorFizz - I want to know what's higher than a mountain, as per your comment:

It was very clear she meant higher than sea level - eg mountains.

No need to point out someone's grammar especially in a PA way.

Previous posters are right. You'll struggle to find guaranteed snow in some cities in February.

Your best bets are Norway and Sweden and look for snow resorts. They won't be city breaks but they have plenty of places that aren't ski orientated either.

cyclingmum67 · 08/11/2024 20:24

@itsgettingweird - if you followed tizer's posts on these boards over the years, you'll know that she gives it as much as she takes.

And, as I said up thread, if you want guaranteed snow in February, head for the US or Canada

DH and DD skied in Norway. Froze them to the core! Not entirely sure it’s that pleasant if you are not very active. I can say it’s freezing in the Antarctic in our winter and lots of snow!

TizerorFizz · 08/11/2024 23:25

@cyclingmum67 Well maybe but I thought I had been reasonably clear that sea level, as opposed to mountains, doesn’t guarantee snow. Many ski resorts do have a variety of activities too and some are beautiful.

unsync · 08/11/2024 23:34

Tromsø has a lot to offer.

An alternative to this is Japan. January and February are the peak months.

On the main island, there are places like Nagano where, amongst other things you can go and see the snow monkeys bathing in the hot springs

But there is also the island of Hokkaido. This island typically gets 15 metres of snow every year. There is so much to do on the island that is not related at all to skiing. The main city is Sapporo and Otaru is also a nice place to visit but you can just google places to see depending on your interest as there is so much to do.

Flights with China Eastern to Sapporo are about £700 at half term including a stop in Shanghai.
