Penny pinching at Heathrow

SLeanne · 02/11/2024 15:57

We are due to go away soon from Heathrow T4. OH and I like a couple of drinks before the flight (at 9pm). However, I was shocked last time that a glass of wine is over £10 a glass. If we are discreet, could we get away with buying a bottle in Duty Free and drinking it before the flight (and disposing of the empty bottle before boarding). I know it's not allowed but has anyone done it before and got away with it? Quite frankly I'm getting sick of having to spend C 100 quid for something to eat and a couple of drinks each (family of 4) and am looking at ways of cheating the system 🤔

Why do people post stuff like this? Of course people go on holidays who can't afford to pay the prices in airport pubs etc. I'm one of them. I scrimp and save for holidays because I enjoy traveling, I rarely buy drinks in airports, except water or maybe a coffee because the budget is already tight

You may have missed the part where the OP very smugly told us that she had paid off her mortgage and her cars, had no debt and went private for breast cancer (horrible about the cancer but the point was she could afford private healthcare).

Bollocks to it, everyone's piling in on you OP, but I get it - it's a total rip off and you're a captive audience. Your plan needs work but I like the jist of it.

Don't worry about anyone who thinks it's tacky, maybe it is, but we can all be a bit tacky once in a while and judgey people who hate on everything aren't people you want on side anyway.

anon12345anon · 02/11/2024 20:04

@SLeanne
I don't know why you are getting such a hard time..... I totally get what you're saying, and it's horrible being ripped off....

However I think you'd be too worried about being caught out..... So suck it up, enjoy spoons and their overpriced food and drink, and just consider it part of your holiday!!

Have a great time away!!

Mumofnetters · 02/11/2024 20:12

Yes plenty of times, I buy a bottle of sprite and drink half and then mix vodka or whatever in! Happens all the time

Whyherewego · 02/11/2024 20:16

What I'd do instead is buy half a bottle of gin and then order some tonics in the bar and add my gin to it !

@NanaNorasNaughtyKnickers Some of these posters have never been brought up to be thrifty because you’re skint and it shows 😂

I was brought up in a single parent family, very little money and very thrifty.

That's not the case anymore though (as the OP claims it isn't for her) so I don't go around acting like it is to the degree of decanting wine in a public toilet to save a couple of quid 🤮

I just wouldn't have the wine at all if I needed the money that badly.

Also, louder for the people at the back, the OP's original 'over £10 a glass' is bollocks.

I signed up to Amex and got 4 lounge passes specifically for this reason recently, did it all within a week as you can apply for the passes before getting the physical card. Just need to remember to cancel before it renews to avoid £££!

When did I ever mention decanting wine in a toilet? Please reply

I’ve never, ever ever seen a gate check to ensure that passengers still have your duty free…or ever heard that a boarding card carries any indication that the passenger has bought Duty Free airside..

@Cerealkiller4U

they can and they do check liquids because of 9/11.im almost certain that’s why the 100ml came into force. Because of the explosive contents they brought in the flight.

No liquids involved in the 9/11 attack, the liquids ban was a result of a later plot (in 2006).

Thank you

I am actually. Mortgage paid off. Tick. Cars paid off. Tick. No debts. Breast cancer treatment all private. So I am laughing at all these nasty comments.

Then you've got plenty of money to buy a glass of wine, haven't you?!
Stop being a skank Grin.

I don't drink alcohol, so this might be a terrible idea, but could you bring wine from home, decanted into water bottles (the non-see through kind) and then drink it before going through security?

Amazing 😅 best advice yet. Standing at security mainlining wine out of a water bottle

Why should I when airports have a monopoly?

Maybe she has money for these things through being a 'skank'.

newusern9999 · 02/11/2024 20:38

How much is a glass of wine normally at a pub? I didn’t think it was that much less than £10. Maybe £6-7? Certainly not the £2 OP suggested when she said she didn’t want to pay 5 times more for a glass of wine. I can’t imagine that the duty free bottles of wine are much less than £20 either? A toblerone is usually £10

hilarious. Actually some of the wealthiest people I know wouldn’t spend Christmas.
Perhaps that’s the secret, being an absolute tight arse.

Google is free people. Op good luck getting a knife through an airport

Maybe they can pick up a knife when they're snaffling the wine glasses?

I don't go to pubs more than 3 times a year.

How do you know I'm not going away for the weekend?! FYI suspect I have ASD (undiagnosed, my DS is diagnosed) as I spend lots of time researching our holidays and getting the best deals I can to the point of obsession in my spare time. I have already shaved a lot off airport parking. We have several holidays a year (not always involving flights), and by doing this we end up getting one of them for 'free'.

Obsessing about a good deal on parking and holiday cost is no way an ASD trait. It’s normal, half educated human behaviour. I’ve been doing this for the past 20 years, way before ASD become the latest cool affliction to (suspectedly ) have!!!

Mosalahiwoukd · 02/11/2024 20:44

I have a new business idea. A little side hustle … buy the cheapest Ryanair ticket to get into departures, buy a load of cheap duty free, get some mixers from Smiths, the paper cups I can just bring along in my hand luggage, set myself up in a toilet cubicle and sell £3 cocktails to misers.
Make a fortune in a day!

IcyLilacZebra · 02/11/2024 20:44

I agree the prices are crazy at airports tbh Ive got a holiday booked for next year and don't intend to spend loads at the airport but probably will buy 1 drink don't think we will eat their

randomfemthinker · 02/11/2024 20:45

OP, I'm confused as to why you're getting so much hate and abusive comments. I'm a frugal ND person as well and I do think many public establishments charge an awful lot, particularly at places like airports. Holiday's are often not cheap and finding 100 different ways to save money can signify the difference between being able to afford to go away or not go away for many people.

This thread again shows the shaming low income people/poorer people who might want a holiday (I don't mean you personally, OP) face in general in opting out of some of the expensive capitalist traps of spending. If it's allowed, I would for sure unapologetically pour your wine into an empty coffee cup whilst sat in a departure lounge seat and enjoy it. A drink or to before a flight is often embraced by many over the holiday experience, hence why we have full bars or offered alcohol on a flight to begin with.
