Your favourite UK/short haul trips with kids

Next year I’m planning several smaller, shorter haul trips for us all in 2025 rather than one big summer holiday. (Dcs are 11 and 9).

Copenhagen is top of the list for either May half term or summer - 3 or 4 nights. We have really enjoyed glamping in Norfolk and had a brilliant Scotland holiday last year.

Looking for excellent glamping sites in the UK or just anything at all that you’ve loved as a family with children of similar ages.

my own personal love is breathtaking scenery, kids are less fussed 😁

thank you!

We love Thirsk it’s only a small little town but absolutely beautiful and full of charm! Harrogate is another place we like to visit (not only for Betty’s tea room, though it’s a must)

we love Denmark as a family, will it be your first time there?

Fandangles · 28/10/2024 19:17

@Favouritefruits yes first time! Ive heard great things about Copenhagen. If you have any must do’s, I’d love to hear. We stopped briefly In Harrogate on the way to Northumberland a few years ago and loved it. We have similar tastes 😁

You must do Tivoli if you have children and the Experimentarium, both are brilliant! The gardens at Tivoli are worth a look even without going on rides. I must warn you aboutCopenhagen, we weren’t prepared for the cost of simple things it’s extremely expensive like £20 for four soft drinks! I hope you have a lovely time!

if you do venture to Thirsk make sure you visit the world of Jame’s Herriot if you watch All creatures!

Ooh thank you. I had tivoli on the list but wasn’t aware of the experimentarium, that looks brilliant. Thank you!

Tyn-yr-Onnen Farm has great views and is really well located - walking distance to a microbrewery, 15 mins drive the beach and close to ZipWorld and the train to Mt Snowdon summit.
Bwlchgwyn Farm is right on the coast and has pony trekking which we really enjoyed.

@Forgottenmyphone thank you! Going to look these up 🙏

The Yorkshire Dales around Richmond.

Cumbria so much to do - we always stay in the Northern part close to Ullswater. We did a drive up to Vindolanda the Roman fort absolutely amazing.

South Wales, love around Tenby.

Great langdale glamping, great walks from there, hot tub with each hut, beautiful views and no WiFi or mobile reception. Walkable to the pub, but we usually drive.

Isle of Wight
Belfast and the coast, giants causeway etc
My kids surprisingly loved Matlock Bath

One of the many lovely cities in the Netherlands (Utrecht, Delft, The Hague etc) with a day at Efteling.

Jammedchakra · 29/10/2024 07:44

Cheddar Gorge and Wells are lovely.
Dovedale for walking
North Wales and go down the slate mines - fascinating.

If you want a bit further Iceland in summer is amazing.

We are also off to Svalbard this summer, but very spendy.

Jammedchakra · 29/10/2024 07:46

Amsterdam - we didn’t see the seedy side, Ann Franks house and museums. Stayed outside with loads on windmills and cheese making.

Bruges is nice for a few days and via euro star.

Funf · 29/10/2024 14:19

North Wales has it all, beaches quiet and busy, loads to see and do for all budgets.
A few ideas here, have a root around the site.

We really like the Jurassic Coast in Dorset. Loads to do- fossil hunting, snorkeling, steam train etc, and beautiful scenery.

Wells usually has a decent supply of small cottages to rent - then there is walkin in the Mendips and CHeddar gorge (plus cheese museum), the Tor and Abbey at Glastonbury and depending on age and inclination of DC the Clarkes village at Street or beach at Weston super Mare.

Isle of Wight, Pembrokeshire north Cornwall - a camping place in Mawgan Porth which looks nice although I've never been there - its on the coast path between Padstow and Newquay so beaches, walks, surfing and there's the sea pool at Trevone which was the inspiration for the Mallory Towers pool and is a safe way to sea swim and not worry about rips etc.

Northumberland near Bamburgh - lots of walking castles, beaches watersports and a day trip to Alnwick if you have Harry Potter fans.

Isle of Wight is great for kids. We took the cable car down to Alum Bay and went to the circus (which was fabulous and is there every year). They were the only things that cost anything like real money. We fed alpacas and petted rescue donkeys; went to the Museum of Poo (great for kids); did a Solar Walk on Ventnor Prom; visited baby pigs and spent time on the beaches. Thee is also a steam train and, of course, Carisbrooke House and Osborne House. We took our GD aged 12 and she loved it.

Jersey is always fun (and good food).

If you like UK and north Europe style breaks, Northern Ireland has a bit of everything. Loads for kids too. You could do a Belfast city break for a couple of days, or go for a week and see loads. North coast, Derry, Causeway etc.
