Turkey?

Would you book Turkey right now, for next year. Just as a solo traveller- no kids.

Fairly early in the year so no Greece available yet.

Just being a bit wary due to the region's issues right now.

I scrapped Tunisia and Egypt right out of the gate.

I’m in Turkey now. Didn’t give it a second thought. We are in the SW though so miles from conflict - Turkey is huge.

skippy67 · 24/10/2024 15:11

Yes I would.

reluctantbrit · 24/10/2024 16:08

Not about the current political issues, I wouldn’t go as a solo female traveler, unless you want to stay only in the resort, you will be hassled all the time. I got fed up with it when travelling with DH.

Cyprus was so much better.

Havalona · 25/10/2024 13:52

Personally I wouldn't fancy Turkey (or any similar patriarchal country TBH) as a solo. I've been with DP and enjoyed it, but avoided the resorts and travelled around to see Ephesus and Gallipoli and so on. Even though I was accompanied there was a lot of "hard sell" annoyance every time I looked in a shop window or glanced at a restaurant menu. It was exhausting and very annoying!

I'd wait and go for Greece, Croatia, or Cyprus.

Unfortunately I have leave that needs to be used before April, and can't be carried over.

Nowhere else appears to be suitable or open to Packages at that time. Can't afford anywhere long haul.

I love turkey and feel v safe - always go all inclusive though

Dogpawssmellgreat · 25/10/2024 16:24

Absolutely. I did a solo holiday there last year. Group tour of singles in Istanbul and then a nice hotel on the beach.

Jessie1259 · 25/10/2024 16:52

Turkey is nothing like Egypt IME. We travelled around for a couple of weeks and I always felt completely safe. I went wondering off around Antalya bus station trying to find the right bus and everyone was really helpful, got up at 5 am to go off and watch turtles hatching on Cirali beach. If you stay in Pammukale visit very early, once the crowds arrive the place is ruined. In Cappodocia the local tours are really good, I hate group tours but these were really good and it is a magical place. I was never hassled or had an Egypt style hard sell anywhere.

Cyprus is absolutely not a patch on Turkey IMO - although the Tombs of the Kings are very cool.If you're just looking for a beach holiday though then I think even in Turkey March might disappoint. A lot of places may also not have opened up yet if that would bother you. At that time of year you'd be better off doing an Istanbul/Cappadocia combo if that would appeal. Istanbul is a fabulous city.

we went here, it was one of my favourite places.
Really good public transport to the touristy places.
We went as a family and found the people friendly and felt very safe.
Im not sure if I would go on my own if I was in my 20s though.

OP, why not try the Canaries, open all year round, good weather too, and ideal for a solo. If you want a fly and flop break that is! There are I'm sure packages all year round.

Fedupandstressed · 27/10/2024 22:20

Well I've booked!

The Cullinan in Belek. Very posh and very expensive but DH has given a grand for my 60th; to splurge not save. Also all inclusive so I may not even venture far, apart from a day trip with jet2.

Going in February so will take a couple of wraps with me.

Bit scared but looking forward to it.

Ooh yes take thin jumpers, cardigan and a jacket. I was further south in the October which will have been warmer than February. It will be cold at night and potentially chilly in the day. Google suggests a high of 16 degrees in February and a low of 9 degrees- which is about what it is in London today and I'm cold.

Enjoy!

Dogpawssmellgreat · 28/10/2024 15:48

Sorry I mean it's 14 degrees in London today! Not as cold as 9

Have a lovely relaxing holiday OP although there is quite a bit to see in that area so you shouldn't get bored. Antalya old town is beautiful and Side is a nice day out. Belek 'town' is purpose built for tourists and may be mostly closed that time of year.

It'll be very quiet in February and, although you may get some lovely, sunny days, it's one of the more unpredictable months so it could also rain. Mornings and evenings will be surprisingly cold so if venturing outside you'll want more than a wrap.

Personally I love winter time in Turkey but don't go expecting it to be the same as a summer sunbathing holiday just chilling in a swimsuit by the pool.
It's more jeans and a t-shirt in a comfy spot behind warm glass and you'll need the pool to be heated and preferably indoors. Make sure you have some ideas ready of things to do if the weather isn't great some days..... maybe treat yourself if there's a spa!

Fedupandstressed · 07/11/2024 19:16

Pool is heated, but I won't be going in it. I have an enclosed type balcony with a huge sofa/ bed type thing where I will be based for most of the week, with my kindle.

Quiet is definitely what I want. Just to be alone and recovering from being peopled out at work, which is a sad side effect when you're an introvert, but the boss's PA.

Maybe a few days out on trips, as long as they're not all day.

Sounds like bliss. Enjoy
