Will a pushchair get damaged on a plane?

Hi there!
We are going to Spain in a few weeks with our DS who is 7 months old. We need to buy a smaller pushchair (we have a bulky travel system at the moment) to take with us. My concern is that the new pushchair we buy could be damaged in the hold of the plane or during transit from the plane etc.

Do I need to be worried about this? Have any of you had your pushchairs damaged in this way?

I don't want to buy a really cheap one as I want it to be really comfortable for my DS and also it can then become our main pushchair that will last some time.

The particular pushchair we are interested in (Chicco Lite Way) doesn't come with a carrybag nor are any of the after market bags big enough. Hence my concern that if the pushchair goes unprotected into the plane it will get damaged.

Any advice appreciated!

Thanks.

Hi we went to spain 2 years ago when DD1 was 21 months and I was pg with DD2, we had the chicco stroller (was great and perfect for holidays!) ours did get slightly damaged on the way home (hood got squashed) however made a complaint and got some compensation (around 90% of the cost of the buggy) however there were loads and loads of buggies at gatwick and it was only mine that was damaged (bit of bad luck for us but at least buggy was useable)

What I hate is that you can take the buggy up to the gate when you board but when you land at gatwick they put buggies in outzize luggage near the carasols but its a good 15min walk from plane to luggage collection and my dd1 decided to fall asleep as we landed and she was a nightmare to carry that far, if we go abroad again I'd be tempted to buy the quinny that folds small enough to go on as hand luggage

You can buy decent carry bags that will fit other makes.

Mothercare used to do a really thin one for around £10.

At a local independent retailer I was able to get a sturdier one with wheels on the bottom.

I have brought a moon kiss for our holiday (similar to the Petite Star Zia) which fold small and goes into a travel bag. You can get the Petite Star Zia on ebay for £49.99 plus £10 postage, and the bags are £14.99 on Kiddicare.

I took a 3 wheeler, can't remember the make, cheapish from Argos I think to Bali a few years back and it was fine. Maybe I just got lucky though?

oh the Petite Star also reclines so they can sleep in it. They are very similar to the Zapp but they do recline

I've flown with pushchairs loads of times, first with Loola, which did get a bit scratched (but then it does weigh a ton), now I have a McClaren volo which is very light and doesn't seem to have come to any harm from being chucked about. I bought the McClaren for about £20 off ebay expressly to use as a travelling pushchair, so I wouldn't have minded if it got damaged, but then we travel a lot (I live abroad) so it was worthwhile. It gets chucked around a lot, on planes, trains and car boots, yet it still looks pretty new.

We took a Maclaren and it was fine. Also taken a M+P pliko. I've only heard of one mum say her's has been damaged. And I talk to a lot of mums!
