I'm fairly sure 16 year olds can't.

Your best bet would be a Premier Inn that they can check-in at a kiosk so don't have to interact with any of the staff if it's essential but fairly sure hotel insurance doesn't cover under 18s staying alone.

mnahmnah · 20/10/2024 15:40

Does it need to be near anything in particular - the uni for an open day? The train station to walk from?

Chersfrozenface · 20/10/2024 15:41

YHA let 16 year olds stay without an adult, I think.

There is this YHA https://www.yha.org.uk/hostel/yha-chester-trafford-hall

DeathMetalMum · 20/10/2024 15:42

What are they staying in chester for? The premier inn in the city centre isn't in the nest of places. A lot of homeless people tend to congregate that area of town. If you are looking budget the two travellodge are better locations.

Traffford hall is very rural and I don't think is accessible by public transport..

I'm staying for work experience near city center

I suspect that others are correct here. Most hotels won’t accept a 16 staying by themselves. You almost certainly won’t be able to book one without a parents back up!

Bluefields96 · 20/10/2024 19:18

You are going to need a credit card when you check in. This will cover the room and any extras. You need this even if you have booked and prepaid on line.

Best - only - way to do this is for an over 18 to book a double room. They check in with you and get two key cards. They can go home. You can then come and go as you please.

You don’t need a credit card at all hotels

If you’re the 16yo then please don’t ask randoms on the internet, or ask them to share the names of where you might stay alone. I wouldn’t want anyone staying alone to be specific about where they could stay, let alone a school student on work experience. Can you get an over 18 to book for you and also for them to check the safety of the area too, but as pp said I don’t think you’ll be covered for staying alone anyway without having an adult make the booking 🤷‍♀️

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 21/10/2024 13:58

I would be quite concerned about a 16 year old staying in a hotel alone TBH.

Why?

When DD was 16 she took herself off on a trip around the UK (you were able to stay at premier in from 16 back then) for a week, she saw London, Manchester, Edinburgh and a few small towns along the way. She had a fabulous week and her being in a hotel alone was not concerning at all.

Comefromaway · 21/10/2024 14:16

The Premier Inn in the centre (by the station) is nice but quite expensive. The Travelodge is cheaper but it can be noisy as it's above a bar. The cheaper ones are all outside the centre. But you are not supposed to be under 18 to stay at them.

Do you know Chester at all? My daughter lived there from the age of 16 but she knew the city well. It's generally a quiet, safe city but as with anywhere, you need to know where to go and not go.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 21/10/2024 14:19

Premier inn do not let under 18s stay in their hotel without an adult being present.

Really? I was living alone in a bedsit at 16 and working full-time

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 21/10/2024 16:13

I presume that was in different times though @Flopsythebunny . I think it's also about someone that young being alone in a town if they don't know anyone else there. Different to going on a post-GCSE trip with your friends.

@yarnbarn

It seems that the OP is the young person wanting to book - and without knowing anything about their background it seems irresponsible to give them advice around circumventing hotel rules around under 18s. That's why I requested my original post be deleted. You have to wonder why they have posted on an anonymous forum rather than speaking with a trusted adult they already know.

It's very different when making a decision and supporting your own DC.

DeliciousApples · 21/10/2024 16:38

Can you not commute? Presumably you live nearby. Would your parents not prefer that? Seems safer. The last thing you want is ogling old pervs and drunks putting you off.

Singleandproud · 21/10/2024 16:49

From previous threads I think OP is an international student living at a boarding school (they aren't very happy with and want to leave).

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 21/10/2024 17:28

@Singleandproud Ah OK, thanks .

DeliciousApples · 22/10/2024 09:35

I'm sorry your boarding school sucks OP.

It's not forever.

However going around a town alone and staying in places you don't know can be dangerous.

We all think we know it all at your age. But speaking from experience, I know I was wrong. I had permanent damage done to me at your age. Never saw it coming. Didn't realise the full extend of how bad strangers can be.

Don't make the mistakes I made. Speak to your house parents if it's bad at school. See what can be done to make it better. It's not forever.
