Do people buy lunch and dinner out on holidays?

When we go on holidays in e.g. France Spain, Italy, we get our breakfast included with the hotel. We eat dinner out in a restaurant. For lunch, we go to a supermarket and get rolls and ham/cheese.

I see lots of people eating a main course at lunchtime. Do those people eat a dinner in the evening as well? Surely this would cost a lot. Any hot lunch could come to 20 euro by the time people get water, coffee after.

What do people generally do? I know people staying in apartments would get breakfast and lunch in the apartment, and eat out for dinner.

I asked people but they evaded the question irl. Dh would eat enough at breakfast to keep going until dinner but I find this uncomfortable.

Weird post.

If you can afford to go abroad you can afford to buy your lunch, surely?

And I don’t understand this idea that lunch “has” to be cold or a significantly smaller meal than dinner.

Weird post indeed.

Is the MN's public opinion meant to disapprove of people spending money on food while on holiday or people daring having 3 meals while on holiday? People are on holiday, they can do whatever they want!

yarnbarn · 18/10/2024 15:09

Not really but it's not a financial decision. We could afford to eat a meal at lunch and dinner but we don't actually eat that much food.

Birdscratch · 18/10/2024 15:10

If I’m staying in a hotel I’ll often go for half board so that breakfast and dinner are covered and lunch might be a light meal in a restaurant or cafe or eg fresh pastries taken back to the room to eat.

PlainJaneSuperbrainthe2nd · 18/10/2024 15:10

It varies but we often self cater as we have young kids. Very often fruit, yoghurt and croissants for breakfast, main meal out at lunch, then cheese, ham, salad with good bread for supper at the apartment. But we might take a picnic if going for a day trip somewhere like a theme park (where food is crap and expensive) or the beach/other outdoorsy place. If in a hotel it tends to be shorter breaks, but we'd usually have one lighter meal in a cafe for example.

RevelryMum · 18/10/2024 15:11

Yes we go out for lunch and dinner if breakfast is included would never occur to me to go to a supermarket I'm on holidays going out to eat is one of the best parts

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 18/10/2024 15:12

If I’m on holiday I’m eating out for breakfast, lunch and evening meal and I’m splashing out, after all I’m on holiday :)

We were on a cruise..as you can imagine food is plentiful onboard.
We went ashore in Gibraltar and when it came to lunchtime we stopped at a bar in the square and ordered 3 bowls of tapas.
Just a nibble or two we thought..
Everything we ordered came in large quantities on a bed of fries..
We were so embarrassed..we have a weak attempt to hoover some of it up but it was way too much. Looking around the restaurant every diner was well catered for..the meals were massive.
We still laugh about it now

mrsm43s · 18/10/2024 15:19

We'd be unlikely to eat 2 big restaurant main meals out, but that's nothing to do with money, just that we tend to eat one main meal a day and one lighter one.

If we're in an apartment, we'd probably fill the fridge with local picky type foods (e.g bread, cheeses and sausisson sec in France, Feta, Kalamata olives and salads in Greece, Olives, chorizo and manchego in Spain etc) and one meal of the day would be a light spread at home, and one meal eaten out - timings would depend on our plans for the day.

If we're staying in a hotel, then both meals will be eaten "out", but one will be a light grabbed snack, and one will be a proper restaurant meal.

We wouldn't be putting any effort into "cooking" and we would be going for local specialities. I love a wander round a foreign supermarket!

Floradon · 18/10/2024 15:19

Yes, we’d usually have lunch out.

Breakfast we wouldn’t generally have more than we’d eat at home - so maybe cereal or toast/pastry and a coffee.

Lunch and dinner would be when we’re out and probably one of those would be a smaller portion - big lunch/smaller dinner or the other way around.

We like trying different places to eat and I’m not keen on making up sandwiches when I’m on holiday! Unless we had to - like if we were going for a long walk and wouldn’t be near anywhere we could eat.

We would budget any holiday to include meals, drinks etc out.

Westfacing · 18/10/2024 15:22

I like to eat at nice places and try the different menus etc but wouldn't want two full restaurant meals in a day. So would have say a good lunch with wine at a fish restaurant at the harbour say, then in the evening some tapas/streetfood/wrap, or whatever the local speciality is.

Always go self catering for the flexibility but aim to get somewhere with outside space and a nice view so it's enjoyable to relax in. We do either lunch or dinner out. The reason for this is when I go abroad, I enjoy looking at markets and supermarkets to find out what type of produce is available. Meals ate in are usually nice bread, deli and salad type things. If there's a well regarded takeaway we'd usually try that. For example, we stayed somewhere that had a very fabulous chicken rotisserie shop. Generally always find a good bakery/patisserie to frequent!

hopeishere · 18/10/2024 15:23

We do but only because DS2 has SN and won't eat sandwiches or anything like that. Such a pain.

Also DH is an Uber tourist so we frequently are doing so much we eat lunch late which I hate. I had to make him stop for lunch when we were in NewYork.

Alliolly · 18/10/2024 15:26

We tend to eat out for lunch.
Our children are still little and a 2/3 course dinner out with tired kids is not much fun.
Our ideal situation is late lunch in a restaurant with outside seating by a park/play area and supermarket snacks/small takeaway for dinner. Or if staying in an apartment we cook something quick in the evening - eggs, picky bits, ready made tortellini - this type of thing. But again our main meal is lunch.

paradisecircus · 18/10/2024 15:26

Depends on the holiday and who I'm with but I like a snacky lunch and a meal out in the evening.
If I'm staying in a cottage I like grazing from the fridge as the evening meal, concocting random combinations from the items there.

AtomicBlondeRose · 18/10/2024 15:28

We wouldn’t tend to eat a sit down meal for both lunch and dinner - it does add up and even a light meal in a cafe tends to be more than I might make for myself. We very often grab bakery stuff for lunch, or just bits from a shop. If it’s sunny, that’s nice to eat in a park or warm square somewhere. I get decision fatigue from choosing where to eat twice a day too!

CoastalCalm · 18/10/2024 15:29

We usually eat out at lunch / early afternoon and then just make something in the apartment in the evening - love local food markets etc and suits us to eat lighter in the evening tapas style

It depends, in France the main meal of the day is generally lunch and French people tend to stick to that. It's possible some holiday makers do too, we certainly do occasionally.
Apart from anything else, in rural France, Spain and Italy many shops close up from about 1.30 till around 4 pm so we make like the locals and have a post-lunch siesta! Or laze around the pool if we have one.
Hence dinner is a lighter meal. When I stayed 'en famille' in France as a student I was often disappointed by exactly how light it was...

JC03745 · 18/10/2024 15:31

Just DH and myself- no kids. Every holiday and place is different!
Sometimes, if breakfast is included, it fills us up till evening time, other than maybe some fruit/snacks during the day
Sometimes, we'll have a lunch in a cafe/restaurant and a lighter, evening meal. especially if they have lunch specials.
In Thailand, we might get some street snacks for either lunch or dinner (som tam, soup, mini kebab things etc) if not that hungry.
I find in hotter countries though, we often aren't that hungry and when busy doing/seeing things, we don't get the urge to have 3, whole meals a day.

RampantIvy · 18/10/2024 15:31

Yes, we do. It's a holiday after all.
We holidayed on a Greek island this year and ate three starters between us for lunches and had a bigger, cooked meal in the evening. I couldn't eat a big meal at lunch and dinner.

BigDahliaFan · 18/10/2024 15:32

Depends, one of the nice things about being away is eating lovely different food - I quite enjoy a leisurely nice lunch on holiday and can then happily eat in the evening too. But I'd rarely eat a breakfast, 3 course lunch and a 3 course dinner.

If we are hiking we'll take sandwiches.

Sometimes in the evenings will just have something tapas like for dinner with a wine in a bar.

Rarely self cater....

Jessie1259 · 18/10/2024 15:33

We always get an apartment so we can eat in for breakfast and one other meal. It saves a huge amount of money. It's not that we can't afford it, just we don't want to spend huge amounts on restaurant food everyday.

Sometimes we eat out for lunch and have dinner in and sometimes we have dinner out and lunch in. We tend to eat dinner early compared to some countries, Spain particularly, and if restaurants don't even open till 8:30 we often just choose to have lunch out instead. We're starving by 7pm.

turkeyboots · 18/10/2024 15:34

I'm another one who refuses to make sandwiches in a hotel room. Either have a big late breakfast/brunch and dinner, or we are buying lunch and dinner in a cafe or restaurant (or McDonald's when the kids get grumpy).
With teenagers I've become an AI convert. 24hr buffet is idea for teenage boys who are bottomless pits.

Parker231 · 18/10/2024 15:34

We eat all our meals at local restaurants - it’s part of the holiday. We try and find restaurants where the locals eat than tourists areas. Never eat at the hotel.

Crikeyalmighty · 18/10/2024 15:35

Tend to eat out at night- full meal and then share maybe a Greek salad/whitebait at lunch or a toasted sandwich each etc plus some fruit that I buy

Mansionscoldandgrey · 18/10/2024 15:36

Yes, and whilst eating, we usually discuss what to have for the next meal 😋
