Long haul destinations with good weather in July/Aug

By good weather I mean mostly hot and sunny… Don’t mind the odd shower or storm but looking for somewhere fairly reliable weather wise.

We love beaches, snorkeling, waterfalls, nice nature etc. Not keen on the Brits Abroad thing.

Ant recommendations?

California and northern half of Australia

Doesn’t Californian burn every summer?

Southern Africa: it's their winter so can be cold at night but it's warm during the day and dry season.

North Queensland. The Great Barrier Reef for snorkelling. Tropical rainforests and waterfalls in the hinterland. Guaranteed sunny weather.

I’m seeing interesting advice based on my travel experiences. That time of year:

  • places like Malaysia / Thailand / Vietnam will be hot (usually are) but you won’t get the clear blue seas. Risk of heavy rains. We did a July trip and had a fantastic time but were rained on a lot
  • same for Sri Lanka - hot weather, v interesting , but rough seas
  • norther Australia- rainy season. Not the best time of year. surprised so many are advising
  • japan is sweatily hot - think 37/38 while walking around seeing stuff
imo perfect is North America West Coast (California, Oregon, Washington Stat, BC). Risk is forest fires

I don't think it's wet season in northern Australia in Julyl/August, it's their winter so it is normally the dry season and conversely it's wet in their summer. Agree that northern hemisphere places like Thailand are potentially very wet.

We had 10 days around Hoi An and there was one afternoon of the 10 that it rained, the rest of the time was clear blue skies and sunshine. That was this year. Very hot, but lovely breeze by the sea.

I would probably look at Nova Scotia. Absolutely amazing beaches, although snorkelling might be an issue! However the natural surroundings are great and it’s beautiful. Going to West Canada or Washington state would be great too. Certainly the Gulf Islands can be included which are accessible from Vancouver. They have snorkelling! And whales .

TizerorFizz · 23/10/2024 09:28

You could also try the Bay Islands of Honduras if you want something adventurous.

TheSandgroper · 23/10/2024 09:32

To whom it may concern

In July and August, northern Australia is not in its rainy season. In fact, that time of year is known colloquially as The Dry.

sincerely

It's odd that you would choose to go long haul when most of Europe and the Med has beautiful weather in July and August? It's very easy to avoid the tourist hot spots.

Of course it depends where you go but we found two weeks in the Far East cheaper than two weeks in Greece in July. Prices across Europe have skyrocketed.

Barbados in early July or Borneo

MermaidMummy06 · 24/10/2024 08:42

Far north Queensland fits all those things. July/August is the best time.

Bumperjumper · 24/10/2024 09:31

Thank you all. Lots of good food for thought.

We live in Europe so not far from a few places mentioned. Hence the desire to go somewhere further afield.

A lot of the Med is now too hot for my family (not me!) in July/August - especially for doing anything other than beach/pool - so that’s one prompt for looking further afield

TizerorFizz · 24/10/2024 13:20

@Bumperjumper I would go further too. See the world. We avoid heat. So Europe in the summer is avoided. Not sure if you would be interested, but Peru and Brazil are brilliant for travelling at this time. You could try Chile too - northern areas! Not beach destinations but great travel destinations in our summer.
