Depends entirely on what you want to do?

Free attractions, meal deals and walking? Not much.

All the expensive attractions, fancy restaurants and cabs? Loads.

CheeseWisely · 18/10/2024 09:48

How long is a piece of string? Are you planning to eat at Nando's or Nobu? Take the tube around or Taxis? Are accommodation costs included or is that already covered? Are you wandering about looking at sights (free) or planning to visit attractions (from free to very very much not free depending what it is).

How many people?

BCSurvivor · 18/10/2024 09:48

That's very vague, OP.
Have you booked accommodation?

Chemenger · 18/10/2024 09:50

How many people? Staying where?

Bjorkdidit · 18/10/2024 10:10

What everyone else said, but also what you can afford. You can have a great time without spending very much at all. Lots of free attractions and reasonably priced street food/takeaway/convenience store options.

Or the sky's the limit, you could spend thousands if you wanted to.

Heide0000 · 21/10/2024 10:38

Thank you.

Take taxis, accommodation costs are not included yet, and we plan to visit both free and paid attractions. It'll be my parents and me.

What are you interested in seeing? Do you want to book tickets to a show and go to a fancy restaurant or do you want to see the free sights, go to museums which are also mostly free and eat more cheaply?

Figure out the things you want to do and see and that will figure out your budget, you can do London very reasonably or spend a fortune if you want.

WiserOlderElf · 21/10/2024 10:45

Anything from a few hundred pounds staying in hostels and walking round the landmarks and free museums, to multiple thousands of pounds to stay in nice hotels, go to the £££ attractions and eat in expensive restaurants, and everything in between. What would you like to do while you’re there?

CheeseWisely · 21/10/2024 10:53

Ok so if it were my Husband and I we'd probably have a sit-down restaurant meal once a day (street food or fast food or snacks the rest of the day), travel by tube and visit a mix of mid-range paid and free attractions, such as the South Kensington museums, Sky Garden, Tower of London, Tower Bridge, Kensington Palace, a guided walk, etc

I'd probably start my budget at £100 per person per day but if you're planning on west end shows, top restaurants and tourist trap attractions like Madame Tussauds or the London Eye then you could easily triple or quadruple that.

Bjorkdidit · 21/10/2024 11:47

It's also worth being aware of ways to do paid attractions for less. Eg if you arrive by train, there's the 2 for 1 deal:

If anyone is a current or retired public sector employee, Boundless Plus is £68 a year but gives unlimited free access to a wide range of sites, including the Royal Palaces, Kew Gardens etc, so you'd cover the cost with just 2/3 visits - the Tower of London for example is £35 Shock

I think I'll visit some museums, famous attractions, and take some photos. I also want to treat my parents to some good food, so the trip will be worthwhile.

Tbh I wouldn’t necessarily use taxis unless there are mobility issues to consider. Traffic is so bad in parts of central London it’s usually quicker to take the tube/walk.

Eating out can be really good value in London, or you can spend a lot on great restaurants.

£100 per person per day (after accommodation) is a decent budget.

Aposterhasnoname · 25/10/2024 08:54

DH and I did a weekend in London for a big celebration and spent the best part of 3 grand, we went to a show, sitting in the best seats, ate at Gordon Ramseys, stayed in the best room in a top hotel and drank in the best cocktail bars.

We did another weekend and spent around £300, stayed in an Airbnb, ate and drank in Wetherspoons and went round the free museums.

I expect you can do it somewhere in between these two extremes.

Spending wise I'd allow £100 to £150 pp per day.
£10 public transport, £20 lunch (street food or cafe) £20 exhibition tickets and upto £100 dinner and drinks depending on how fancy.

I suggest you make a detailed plan, including how many people traveling with you?how many attractions you plan to visit?and how many days you plan to stay in a hotel,so that you can estimate how much it will cost.

Singleandproud · 26/10/2024 08:25

This is so very vague.
When we go to London we stay in a Premier Inn, clean, basic, you know what you are getting and a good hearty breakfast. Rooms are relatively cheap and that's fine as we just want a base and don't spend substantial time in the hotel, you can often get interconnecting rooms if travelling as a group which is useful. We normally go for the Richmond or Stratford one as being slightly further out the rooms are bigger.

Richmond is great for Kew Gardens and Hampton Court and feels very safe to walk around
Stratford is great for shopping and transport links.

If it was my first time in London I would want to do very London specific things so something like:

Day 1) Kensington
The Natural History Museum, Science Museum, V&A, Royal Albert Hall are all close together so something there for part of a day just get timed entry tickets to avoid queues.

Day 2) Centre
Walk through Westminster past the houses of parliament, Downing Street, to Buckingham Palace. Or walk from Westminster to London Eye (I think this is overrated) and Southbank for The Globe and Tate Modern or walk into the centre for National Gallery and Portrait Gallery and go to Trafalgar / Leicester Square and covent garden

Day 3) Tower of London
Ger out at Monument where fire of London started and go up the Monument for the views this is cheap, views are great but it is a spiral stair case. Then walk to the Tower of London

If you have a longer trip
Day 4) Kew gardens

Day 5) Hampton Court

I'm not a foodie so happy to go cheap or street food but I love theatre so I'd head back to my hotel to freshen up and then fit in a show most nights if I can.
