We are looking at possibly a week in France next year 2 Adults, 2 x teens (15/13). We normally just holiday in the UK so this is all new to us and lots to choose from.
We are ideally looking for a base to explore from, transport links would be ideal so we are not tied to using the car. Eldest teen would like to see Paris if possible but we don't want Eurodisney sites or anything like that. Happy to travel a couple of hours one day if needed. Youngest is very interested in war.
If anyone has done this type of holiday can you give some recommendations please as I am clueless.

We will be coming from Scotland so travel wise thinking North of France will be better for us.

La Croix de Vieux Pont has twice-weekly shuttles to and from Paris for day trips. It's a huge park with lots of facilities.

Le bien assise is near Guînes close to Calais. Thé Azincourt museum is nearby and the coast opale has lots of WW2 museums. You'd need a car.

Huttopia Versailles is a campsite within walking distance of the stations at Versailles (from whence you can easily get into Paris). I haven't been, but have heard good things about it.

Just about to recommend La Croix de Vieux Pont - lots of people use it to visit Paris. If you do go there, Pierrefonds chateau is there (they filmed Merlin there, if you can remember that!), you can also visit the Glade of the Armistice, which is super important for both world wars. There are loads of military cemeteries round there, it's very sobering as you just see them constantly whilst driving around. Having said that, we did rely on our car the whole time so I can't comment on public transport.

Also worth a look is European Center Parcs - they are much much cheaper than UK Center Parcs, with plenty for kids to do.

Finally, as you're driving from Scotland, it might be worth looking at the ferries from Hull to Rotterdam - they are expensive, and you still have to drive from Rotterdam, but it cuts down the awful drive to Calais. You go on overnight, it works really well - you get on at tea time, sail through the night, and arrive at about 9 am. Very civilised!

We went this year. It's incredibly convenient to get to Paris, it's a tidy site, the pool is warm, the staff are pleasant. The site is too small to entertain teens on its own but it's a great launch pad.
