If you were going to Italy for a weekend to mark a special occasion, where would you go?

It would be in April. Just me and DH, 2 or 3 nights as we’d be leaving the DC behind. Just trying to decide (and get excited for!) a trip away. I’ve always wanted to go and want to enjoy good food, wine, architecture, museums (but not galleries really), I’d love to visit pompeii but I’m not sure Naples would be the best place to stay at that time of year.

There’s enough to see in Naples for a weekend. I don’t understand why posters don’t look at guide books! I think for a couple of nights only, you don’t want a lot of travel and visiting Pompeii will mean travel once you arrive so I’d enjoy the city I choose over travel,

Admitedly Naples would not be my first choice and I’d stick to Venice, Florence or Rome. Bologna has so many fab places nearby you need a bit longer! Ditto the Puglia region. Tourists flock to Italy. We have found Milan quieter and plenty to see and do. Again look at a good guide book! It’s easy to get from airport to city. It’s an orderly city and has great restaurants and beautiful museums and churches.

Sienna or Palermo

Florence or Palermo or Siracusa and Taormina

not one of the lakes, not enough culture or museums.

Ischia

Admittedly it was years ago that I went & it may have been cleaned up since but I found Florence very disappointing, especially all the graffiti on the buildings & statues. It felt like nobody cared. Loved Venice.

My daughter is currently backpacking in Europe, her next stop is Italy! So I'll let you know! Shes excited for the food more than anything!

Lucca is lovely, and you can easily do a day trip to Florence.

I vote Sorrento for a long weekend. Excellent pizza, wine, loads to do and see.

Sorrento or Rome - or both

I’ve been lucky through work to go to Venice, Rome, Naples, Milan, Pisa and Florence - but my favourite was Verona - beautiful city and the benefit of Lake Garda close by

Venice. The airport is right next to the sea and I would spend money on a speedboat to take me across the water and into the city. Stunning! But if you want to see Pompeii, April is the perfect time to go. Stay in Naples and take the little train that stops at Pompeii and Herculaneum. Also go to Paestum if you can.
Or if you're including Sicily, Palermo has a similar vibe to Naples and there's lots to see. I used the buses and felt very safe.
