Has anyone been to Ribblesdale park near Clitheroe? Looking for a few days away in half term and it popped up on my fb account? Accommodation looks lovely but bit unsure of the area/ if there's anything to do nearby/ if it's as nice as it looks....??

Forest of Borland is nearby and very pretty. We’ve stayed in this area a couple of times but our dc are adults and aren’t with us. Lots to do and see if you go to Leeds. Depends what you want to do. If you like walking it’s great.

Clitheroe is miles from Leeds ?? Am curious as to why you mention there ?

Gingerisgoodforyou · 08/10/2024 22:14

Hmm, I like walking but dc don't! It looks like a park/ estate with accommodation, and a restaurant. Is there anything else there on site itself?

@Neveranynamesleft Mainly because I’d stay nearer Leeds! That was the point if you want more for dc. Staying in the area on the edge of the forest of Bowland is lovely but rural. I guess Halifax is nearer or Skipton but what else?

If DC want a bit more than country walks, maybe look at Lancaster?

Clitheroe has a castle and they often do activities for children there.

There is Pendle Hill nearby with the history of the pendle witches and the quakers. Roughlee and Barley have lots of history surrounding the witch trials and this will also be a popular area coming up to Hallowe'en. People go up Pendle on the night and there are lots of festivities in the area.

There is also the Tolkien Trail near there which is a lovely walk near Stonyhurst College.

Thornton Hall park is nearby which have lots of things on for the kids. Ribchester isn't too far away with a Roman ruins and museum. There is also a wildlife reserve not far away called Brockholes. It also isn't far from Skipton where there is a bigger castle and steam train at Embsay.

I am from there and the person above almost has it fight with exception of distances. Ribchester and brockholes are about a 50 minute drive there is far better and closer things!

Malham Cove 2 minutes away little walk, lots of nice country tea rooms and pubs.

Skipton 25 minutes away, lovely market town, excellent castle, canal trips, tearooms.

Slightly further is Bolton abbey which is close to the steam train.

Clitheroe castle is well small, but Clitheroe has some lovely shops and eateries.

Gisburn itself has a deli, lovely walks, the park itself has a lovely restaurant and a small park.

Holden cough nurseries is the nicest garden centre I've ever been too great Xmas stuff and is 10 minutes away.

Gisburn is a countryside location so if you don't like walking it isn't for you!

Malham cove is 20 minutes away not 2

I meet friends in the cafe sometimes which is always lovely . It’s between skipton and clitheroe so perhaps google to see if there are things you’d do, there’s a farm park near skipton, billy bobs ice cream parlour a bit further out. What things do you want? There’s a pool depending on when you go.

Alan Bennett was in the cafe at Holden clough last time I went. Friend and I beside ourselves!

@TorroFerney he has good taste!

This thread is making me miss home!!

Gingerisgoodforyou · 09/10/2024 22:32

Ah thanks all for the info/ tips, much appreciated :)

MiddleAgedDread I did look at the website of course, but it looks very slick compared to the prices, so I wasn't sure how accurate it is. The pictures don't show a map/ pictures of exteriors etc. Also its not a very touristy area which made me wonder re surroundings. Isn't a main point of the holidays thread to help people get more info than you can get from just Googling?

Ooh get the dc up pendle Hill. The steps are hard work but it's over quickly and you can congratulate yourselves in the way down. Nice cafe at the bottom. Sculpture trail near there I keep meaning to do.

Lovely countryside. Forest of Bowland is pretty. Great pub lunches. Few walks. Read and chill. Kids go on devices if you're relaxed about that. Everyone's happy.
