Champagne in hold luggage?

Can I (carefully) pack champagne in my hold luggage? Or will there be a problem with air pressure? Would like to take a bottle with me as a gift for my hosts.

I know a guy who used to take 6 bottles without incident to his daughter in Australia so if you pack it well it's possible.

Is it very special champagne or could you not just pick it u the other side? I wouldn't want to risk it but I've never noticed if they sell it at the airport / duty free or on the plane, presumably if they do it'll be fine.

Rocknrollstar · 07/10/2024 16:29

Why don’t you buy it at the airport and carry it on?

Aaron95 · 07/10/2024 16:33

Yes you can. The pressure inside the bottle is around 5-6 times atmospheric pressure. Any pressure changes on the plane will not affect a bottle of champagne. Those bottles are designed to contain far more than that.

Thank you. It's a specific bottle I would like to take.

I've done it a couple of times and it has been fine.

Missionimprobable · 07/10/2024 18:21

First time we did it we asked at check in and they said its fine.
Pack it well and put it in a bag just in case it gets smashed.

We took a few bottles of prosecco without issue

AnnieMcFanny · 07/10/2024 18:24

I’ve never regretted doing this.

Yes. But if you pack more than one bottle, or anything else that is hard, wrap them in lots of t-shirts etc. We once packed two bottles of wine in a case, and when we arrived we had one bottle and a lot of washing to do. Fortunately it was white wine...

It won't blow up if that's what's concerning you, so all you have to do is pack it securely. A cardboard or other box lined with bits of styrofoam is good, but just packing clothes and towels around it will be ok, I hope!
