Anyone been to Malta recently, could you please share some good restaurants with reasonable prices?
We(2 adults and a 2y DD) will be staying a week at a hotel without kitchen, breakfast included so need to sort out lunch/dinner.
Don't want to eat mcdonald /kfc everyday, but can't afford £20 each meal per person for a week.
Any suggestions to eat healthy /smart all welcome.
Not sure if there are wetherspoon-like restaurant in Malta?

Our hope lists :

  • seafood or Chinese restaurants /buffet
  • £15ish pp
  • around Valletta(not a must as we will visit Gozo and others places too)

Many thanks

We went to Malta a couple of years ago and eating out seemed pretty cheap and portions were very large in that a starter size pasta was enough for lunch or even dinner for many people and cost under 10 euros. So be careful not to over order, if you want more you can always order something else or get ice creams from the supermarket. Definitely just get a plate for DD and let her eat some of your food.

I can't remember seeing Chinese restaurants, or pub chains. Seafood would probably be available at local restaurants. There's also lots of Italian restaurants which are good on a budget.

There's a few traditional pastizzi shops that might be good for lunch, handmade pasties with a selection of filings. Also a local sandwich with tuna, tomatoes and capers in a crusty roll which would also be good for lunch. If you have hold luggage you could take picnic crockery and a knife you could use to make sandwiches to save buying them.

Supermarkets aren't great, seem expensive and not good selection also there's a couple of Lidls, but might not be conveniently located.

There’s a chain called eeetwell that does salads and sandwiches and warm bowls with beef, chicken etc. They are reasonably priced and made a good change for us after eating so many heavier restaurant meals.

I was there at Easter, there is a food court on merchant street behind the Grand Masters Palace. We had nice pizza at San Paulo Naufrago, but it's trendy and probably on the pricier side of your budget. There is Champs Pastizzeria near archaeology museum which is good for a cheap hot lunch on the go (takeaway only), probably lots of similar places in the city. We grabbed lunch from Greens Supermarket in Victoria, Gozo a couple of times and just took food with us to the beach to eat. There are branches elsewhere but not in Valletta that I know of. Malta was great.
