Anyone know of good places to stay in Manhattan?

We are going to New York at the beginning of August and will be there for 4 days with 3 dcs. We're looking for either a hotel with adjoining rooms or apartment to rent (although I imagine apartments rent by the week only) and don't really mind what part of town it's in, as long as it's in Manhattan. Trying to keep costs reasonable, too... Any ideas?

here

The modern suite is great apart from the bathroom which is rather ancient and crummy

It has a big bedroom with two double beds in and a big sitting room. There is another bedroom at the front you can adjoin as well.

They have a kitchen
Is close to Union Sq tube

We stay there as is close to our mates there. It is run by a slightly mad bloke

One issue is that the tv etc is in the bedroom which is stupid if you are staying in with dcs in bed

have a good look at tripadvisor.com as I've found the reviews there spot on for finding places (they have them ranked according to reviews)

NYU have 'visitor accommodation' in Greenwich Village. It comprises of a small (portered) block of very basic apartments - 2 twin bedrooms with kitchen, bathroom and small living area with sofa bed. Cheap as chips though. Security desk 24 hours and they will change linen / towels for you and clean it once a week I think. Struggling to find link. I'll be back!

wilbur · 22/04/2008 20:10

Thanks for these.

CD - that place looks fab and perfect location as we are taking Amtrak up to Boston from Union Stn later in the week. Will look into it.

NYU accomodation sounds good too, MrsMattie, I know the area well as I did a post-grad thing at NYU many moons ago. If you find a link, that would be great.

really>?

the whole thing?
I think they have other connecting rooms

What a shame

Iwantmybed · 22/04/2008 23:05

Don't stay at the waldorf, fab famous hotel with nothing much around it at night within walking distance. I'd stay near times square or the village if I went again.

wilbur · 23/04/2008 09:38

Although it may have been the mention of my three delightful children that caused the sudden non-availability of the rooms, cd . I find the offspring to be a terrible burden when trying to find nice places to stay...

Iwantmy - yes, we thought Village or Soho 1st choice, then midtown, then Upper West Side as we have friends there. Where is the Waldorf? It's so famous, but I have no idea where it is.

I made the overexcited mistake of showing ds1 the FAO Schwartz website so now he just wants to stay there, or next door, at a push.

the waldorf is up by grand central station, we stay there last month - can never remember actual street names but it might have been on 53rd?

We actually found loads of nice restaurants within walking distances but I guess it depends how far you want to walk!!

We walked to chinatown from the waldorf - it took around 40 mins I think.

Great hotel with lots of atmosphere and history - dont know about adjoining rooms though

binkleandflip · 23/04/2008 09:44

And only about 10/15 mins walk to FAO - easier on the way there than on the way back IYSWIM

jlimum · 25/04/2008 10:14

Hi Wilbur I came on here looking for exactly what this thread is asking about. I will be in NY early Aug with 3 dcs, meeting my brother who lives in maryland. three days in NY then on to his place. So will watch this thread with interest.
Does anyone have any more ideas?

wilbur · 28/04/2008 16:49

Parker Meridien looks wonderful and great location. Am going to check prices and availability.

Soyabean - mumsnet takes NY, eh?

Hassled · 28/04/2008 16:56

Have you tried Craig's List?. Meant to be very good but no direct experience.

soyabean · 28/04/2008 22:26

I can't see an email for Parker Meridien, jliemum did you phone to get your interconnecting rooms, and can you remember the cost (ish)? Thanks!

soyabean · 28/04/2008 22:29

Oh and MrsMAttie if you are still there did you find the website for the NYU accommodation? It sounds ideal but googling is not coming up withanything. Thanks.

PrincessPeaHead · 28/04/2008 22:34

has anyone said the Alex? Excellent, and rooms with full kitchens and dining tables etc - perfect for families. masses of space. sophable also a fan.

if you look on expedia you can often get much better deals than rack rent

soyabean · 09/06/2008 20:35

MrsMattie are you still around? Have been trying to find out about The NYU accomm which sounds excellent but cant get through to a human..Did you have a connection? Affiliated to NYU? It sounds like that might be needed/ If not I would really love to hear how you booked it!

Many many thanks

finallypregnant · 13/06/2008 10:41

DO NOT USE CRAIGLIST. I am sure if you search that name on Tripadvisor you will find that it is a scam.

There are not many, if any reputable apartment rents in New York. We've been advised to look at radio city apartments as they have affordable suites and adjoining rooms.

Zazette · 13/06/2008 10:50

Craig's List is not a scam! it's a huge phenomenon in the US. That's a bit like saying 'ignore everything you see on Mumsnet, it's a scam'. It is a website where people advertise private rentals (cf Stilwell's for UK holiday cottages - though Craig's List is used for many things beside holiday accommodation). If you search it on Tripadvisor you will find a huge variety of experiences, in fact. But some of the people who advertise on it may be untrustworthy, of course.

I know someone who found the love of his life on Craig's List...

SazzaB · 17/06/2008 21:32

We stayed at the Affina Manhattan, 7th Ave over Easter with a new baby - worked well for us - serviced apartments so you still get the support of room service and house keeping - wee bit dated though.

soyabean · 26/10/2008 21:42

I know this thread is long dead but just wanted to say that we ebnded up staying at radio city apartments and it was fine, not glamourous but really good to have a sitting room area and bedrooms off it. Extremely central but not noisy or anything. I would stay there again with children.

soyabean · 26/10/2008 21:43

'glamorous'
