I am taking my 12&15yr old boys to Egypt. Their father is refusing with it being unstable in surrounding areas.
Gov. uk states it's safe to travel. I can't cancel because of that, or lose all money. Wgat do I do? Can he stop me from taking them.

When are you travelling? The advice for Egypt may change in the near future. You'll need a court order afaik if he won't agree.

House4DS · 02/10/2024 11:19

Do you normally take a letter for consent?
I've never taken one and traveled lots with my kids without issue.
Presumably he'd actually need a court order to prevent you rather than the other way round.

If you get a Child Arrangement Order then you can take your child on holiday for up to 28 days without the other parent’s permission. It costs 210 plus a mediation session iirc

Hope you get sorted OP …..is he generally reasonable?

Procrastinates · 02/10/2024 11:22

The FCDO advices against all but essential travel to Egypt so I can see his reluctance. Surely you would be able to get your money back through your insurance if you didn't go because of this?

Arlanymor · 02/10/2024 11:22

Erm the government IS advising against travel to Egypt - in fact right at the top of the FCDO page it states: FCDO advises against all travel to parts of Egypt. More information here: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/egypt

This is only certain parts, the tourist sites are still safe to travel to. That is why it has not been cancelled yet. @Procrastinates

Can you change it? Maybe to Spain or the like?

I'd be very surprised if they didn't update the warning to cover more areas soon. If you can't cancel I would be looking to change the booking if possible. I think his reluctance is very understandable to be honest and if the roles were reversed you'd probably feel very similarly.

Sorry I misread something, I would still try to cancel now however as the situation could very well escalate.

NewIdeasToday · 02/10/2024 12:42

I wouldn’t travel to Egypt with my family now under any circumstances. Your ex husband’s reservations are entirely understandable.

OolongTeaDrinker · 02/10/2024 12:46

Is he refusing to consent to holidays in general, or just to Egypt? If it's just to Egypt, then at the moment I don't blame him. The middle east region is a powder keg at the moment, and I don't think going to Egypt for a holiday right now is a reasonable thing to do. I definitely wouldn't want my kids going there so I do see his point.

Greenbike · 02/10/2024 12:56

Egypt (the main tourist areas anyway) is fine. Millions of people visit every year. Egypt is not at risk of being invaded by Israel or anyone else. If it was dangerous the FCDO would advise against all travel, but they don’t.

OP, if worst comes to the worst you can probably just take them - as PP have said the chances of being stopped at the airport are very low, especially given your children are relatively old.
