Must sees for 2 days in Amsterdam with DC

We've got almost 2 full days unexpectedly in Amsterdam in 2 weeks time. We'll have our 2 dc with us, aged 14 and 9.

I know practically nothing about Amsterdam, I've bought the lonely planet guide, but I'm looking for some recommendations from other parents please!

If you can get a slot for the Anne Frank Museum, I would seize it above anything else. I went with similarly aged kids a few years ago and we all found it incredibly moving.

See I really didn't enjoy it at all! And I was a hugely into Anne Frank growing up, loved reading about her and doing projects on her. But the museum was my least favourite part of Amsterdam.

I don't think the Ann Frank house is somewhere you go to 'enjoy' as such. I'd still recommend it as a 'must see' in AMS. Acknowledging key historical events and people is an important part of visiting new cities IMO, and visiting AF house was educational and sobering. And the kids will study WW2 and the holocaust at some point - AF house brings some of that to life. It's only a relatively short visit though, so it fits into a wider agenda very nicely.

Yes, it would be like assuming a trip to the Dachau concentration camp be a jolly good day out.

@BuzzieLittleBee fair point, enjoy was the wrong word.
