Where to stay in Lisbon?

Have also done a post in "chat"

I'm off to Lisbon in October. I can't decide whether to stay in Alfama, so right in the old town and the really hilly area, or Baixa, Baixa seems to make more sense being central. But, I love beautiful old buildings and little winding streets.
Where shall I chose?

Stay in Baixa. You will be within walking distance of the vibrant nightlife of the Bairro Alto or Cais do Sodré districts, but far enough away to avoid the late-night noise and ensuing chaos.
Alfama is pretty safe during the day, but at night, it’s better to be careful, especially in quiet alleys.

Yeah I second Baixa. Means you are central to both Alfama and Bairro Alto, and close to the main train station if you decide to visit Sintra.

Speaking of Sintra, is one day enough? We've only got three days in total so want to use it wisely.

Yes, one day in Sintra is enough. I took an early train from Lisbon (do check train times at they were at different times each hour). When I arrived in Sintra there were buses lined up outside taking passengers up the hill to Pena Palace & the Moorish Castle. I visited both then took the bus back down in the afternoon and wandered around the historic centre of town, visited the National Palace, had a drink in an outside bar before catching the bus back to the train station,
