To get little suitcases for the kids?

We are flying abroad at Christmas and it's the first time we've ever gone anywhere for 2 weeks.
No washing machine so will need 2 weeks worth of clothes, plus spares in case of potty accidents / spillages.

DH says we should get my 3 and 5 year olds their own little suitcases for them to pull along.

I think it's a terrible idea as inevitably they won't want to carry them, and also as we fly home late (land at midnight) I'm pretty sure we'll end up carrying the kids / 3yr old will be asleep, never mind their suitcases!

Are we better sharing 2 large cases between 4 or us, or is he right and we should get them to have their own?

I follow the travel mum on Instagram and they go with hand luggage only for 4 of them
I saw one of her reels where she said they only do hand luggage only but was checking a car seat and sneaking a massive extra rucksack in car seat bag… genius tip and good on her but it did mean what she’d just said about ‘hand luggage only’ wasn’t actually true!

I agree that 3 is too young. In a few years, hand luggage for everybody is a great choice, we almost always travel like that - but DC are a few years older. Works very well for us, everybody gets their own suitcase and is in charge of packing and handling it. Normal cabin suitcase though, not a child one.

With a 3yo, I'd go for checked in luggage and small backpacks as cabin luggage.

Sorry you're right, the one I linked above is more a pull along ride-on than a scooter so good for younger kids - there are things like this where they scoot under their own steam and you don't have to pull them: www.amazon.co.uk/DDYDM-Suitcase-Hardshell-Multifunctional-Lightweight/dp/B0D58DWMJX?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&psc=1&smid=A1K6DT8MR8QX38

Don’t forget there’s a huge chance there’ll be a laundrette or some form of a service available nearby

Oh, god, kids with their own little suitcases are an absolute menace at airports. To their parents , who end up carrying them, in the security queue, in the crowds, it’s just not a practical way to do things. Makes it harder to hold your kids hands and hold them near you.

Trunkis are an expensive gimmick, IMO / IME

I find DS’ trunki really useful in corralling him about at the airport. I wouldn’t get him a bag to pull himself though

No luggage foe them as already mentioned but where are you going where you cannot hand wash items or use a laundry service or launderette?

Avatartar · 26/09/2024 10:51

We found trunkies useful, they stopped the DCs from getting bored and whacking each other. Packing wise they had snacks, cuddly toys and a change of clothing in them and helped the DCs feel a bit of responsibility
