Going for a long weekend in Prague in early October. Just curious to hear people’s must dos or see and any can’t be missed food please? Just me and DH going.

Seen lots on TikTok but they seem to be the same few things over and over so assuming people just recycle other peoples videos 😅

Last time we went we did a fab walking tour of the Castle District. Boat trip. Self-guided tour of the Jewish Quarter and cemetery. Aperols at Klub Lavka overlooking the Charles Bridge. Lovely food at Mlynec restaurant and Kampa Park (£££) Wandering around Mala Strana and crossing the bridge. I really like the Mucha Museum.

Dinner on the jazz boat.

Thank you both! The restaurants both look amazing and the Jazz cruise is also a great idea.

The cafe in the Obecní Dům concert hall is lovely!

There was a big flood in Czechia two weeks ago.
Prague wasn't damaged and is totally ok and safe to visit (all cities in western half of the country are ok, troubles were in some parts of the east of the country and border areas).

There are a few limitations of tourist services still in place.

Funicular at Petrin doesn't operate.
Coffees and businesses at the low river banks in the center are getting slowly back to operation.
River boats at the very city center were okayed for operations in last few days, but both south and north part of the river in Prague are still waiting for the river safety inspections. It means that the bookable offering now is limited and closer to your stay might be expanded with longer routes as other parts of the river are confirmed to be safe(or not).
Tree inspection in Prague parks should be finished, if some small area/path is taped off, respect the limitation.

And a few tips

Old castle Vyšehrad (mostly outdoor walk, great views and historical architecture around)

Small river ferries are included in public transport ticket (currently only the city center ones)

Dům u Černé Matky Boží - Prague cubism exhibition (mostly applied design like architecture, furniture, so it is fun even for people who don't enjoy traditional paintings and so on).

If you do enjoy paintings, there are many choices depending on the era (13-14th century in old monastery, or 1918-1938 in a modern building).

To overlook the city, either Petrin (small Eiffel Tower - it is a copy, but 1890s copy) or towerpark - futuristic building with high rise restaurant and bar Oblaca (you can visit a viewing deck or book both view and restaurant deck).

Uber won a selection for the official airport taxi, and there is a convenient app-less process to order them at the airport kiosk for a regulated price, but if you do use an app, you can get a better price ordering from regular Uber drivers pool, not the airport -specific one. In that case the pickup is at departures, not arrivals level.

When you book tickets for the castle district - they need to be printed, the code on the phone is not accepted.

It is a lovely area, I found the castle itself a bit meh though.

The Jewish district is a must, you get one ticket (don't exchange at the cemetery, do it at any of the synagoes included, you save a lot of queuing) and then you walk around.

We loved the communist museum, a bit of a hidden thing but worth going.

We ate here one evening, booking recommended and very good

Lots of cafes with real hot chocolate, it's a thick liquid but so tasty.

The town hall with the astronomic clock is good, you need to time it so you are in the room when it run. And then once more from the outside.

Restaurant Bredovský dvůr – we cook a traditional Czech kitchen

The obecni dum tour, the Castle, Charles bridge, the astronomical clock ( just beware of pickpockets) , we watched jazz at U maleho glena ( but it's tiny) . The Mucha Museum. The Jewish quarter, although it drove me to tears.
I've been to Prague so many times it's hard to remember what the main things to do are.

Don't bother going to U Flecku the beer is seriously aimed at tourists. We dropped in as soon as it opened and necked our drink and left before they realised what was happening.

I can highly recommend these guys www.tours-prague.eu they do free walking tours.

We did two tours the city tour and the ghost tour at night. The guides were very informative and you just pay what you think it was worth at the end.

I also recommend going to Pork's restaurant for the best pork knuckle ever!

Thank you everyone! I’m so looking forward to going. I did wonder about the flooding (saw on TikTok so hardly a reliable source 😅) but good to know what may still be affected as we are going this weekend.

There's a lot of really good information on both the 'Honest Guide' and 'Real Prague Guides' YouTube channels.

Belindabelle · 24/10/2024 23:29

@Confusedmermaid1 Just wondering how you got on in Prague. What are your recommendations now you have been.

DH and I are going soon.

Confusedmermaid1 · 27/10/2024 11:24

@Belindabelle hi we had a lovely time away 🥰
If you’re going to go to Prague castle I’d recommend going early, we went on the Sunday around 9:30 and it was so lovely to walk around without the massive crowds however we didn’t realise that the Cathedral didn’t open until 12 on Sundays so it’s worth baring that in mind.. the other buildings were open earlier.

If you’re into churches/cathedrals etc then the Basilica of St Peter and St Paul is worth a look and the cemetery there has some impressive graves and also has a park area with some great views over Prague.

We did a boat trip from near the Charles bridge which was a great way to get some of the history of the buildings along the river and save your feet the walking! the particular one we went with was linked to the Charles Bridge museum, they give you a drink and snack (beer, wine, hot drinks or soft drinks). The employees dress in sailor costumes so we weren’t expecting much as it seemed a bit gimmicky but it was very informative.

Don’t bother with the Terasa U Prince near the astronomical clock for food. It was average and extortionate, typical tourist trap so shouldn’t have been surprised but I had seen it recommended so many times elsewhere!

We had a lovely meal at Cafe imperial for lunch and Marina ristorante in the evening (a lot of the restaurants mentioned here were unfortunately booked by the time we thought about it). Marina is a boat overlooking Prague castle and the river so it’s worth asking for a window table if you book ahead but it didn’t seem that booking was necessary (it was a Monday though)

We could have used an extra day or arriving earlier/leaving later on one of the days so we’re planning to go back some time for the Christmas markets 😊
