Do you need to prebook motels in the USA or can you just turn up

Next summer we are going to NYC, Washington DC and also doing a little tour of Virginia and that region. I have booked a hotel and Airbnb for the cities both nothing for the other part of the holiday. Ds2 in particular wants to drive up to motels like in the films, but can you do this? I was last in the USA nearly 20 years and pre-booked city accommodation then, as I recall, we stayed at a couple of places we drove up to. But it was a long time ago, we had no dc (but mine are 16 and 18, so not little/difficult) and I didn't worry much about cost etc.

I'd love to know what others think or whether anyone has experience of doing this.

It really varies. I have found motels booked solid everywhere and found rooms at the last minute no problem.

it will depend on local events and weather.

Sneak off around 4pm and book ahead online for a place that you will be passing in the early evening. Optional: In the special requests section of the booking, mention that when you check in you will be pretending to ask if they have a room, to impress your kids.

Where are you starting off? I recall being asked for proof of accommodation at immigration.

I would strongly recommend booking at least a few days ahead. Not just to secure a room, but also to get a better rate. If you just turn up you'll pay more.

NB: Be aware of additional taxes and tourist tax, especially in major cities, and especially NYC. And car parking charges.

I use Booking.com and it is always cheaper than leaving it until nearer the time. Now as to turning up on the night - not sure how that goes. They might cut you a deal or think you are desperate. Popular areas do get booked out though.

We don't book ahead in my (American) family for motels in motel-full places.

My dad is fussy & likes NAICE hotels with KS beds, so does tend to book those, but not always.
