it all depends on where you're planning to go. it's really hot at that time of year (i lived there) so try somewhere like karuizawa or towards the mountains. one of the benefits of heading towards the mountains is that it will be cooler and there are quite a few onsen. if you give me an idea of what area you're looking to travel to i can ask my sister for tips. she's doing tourism etc. as a major and seems to know this kind of stuff. watch out for the mossies!!!

where in Japan will you be?
Parts of Tokyo would be fascinating for kids that age - the fish market is amazing, but a very early morning trip.

Away from Tokyo but not too far is the Izu Peninsula, that has amazing onsens (def something that you shouldn't miss) and also a gorgeous coastal drive.

Out of Tokyo Kyoto is a beautiful city, or Nara (you could combine the 2)

Anywhere in japan would be interesting - I lived there for a few years and would love love love to go back

yurt1 · 21/04/2008 23:25

Gosh I'd love to go back too.

Where will you be staying?

Go rural for a few days if you can. Stay in a ryoken and definitely 'do' an onsen.

Read anything by Alan Booth before you go.

shubiedoo · 22/04/2008 00:12

Hana, did you live in Japan too?! And you're from Dartmouth? (I used to be "skerriesmum", lived in Ireland and now Dartmouth...) I lived in Hyogo for two years, many years ago!

There are lots of things to do in Tokyo, just looking at the neon cityscape is cool.

hana · 22/04/2008 00:17

how odd - I saw the name shubiedoo and immediately thought of Shubie Park.....! Yes - I was a JET in Japan - in Shizuoka - from 95-97. That's where I met my husband and why I'm soooooo far from home.

I wonder if we know each other....what a small world eh? I am up far too late, still have lunches to make for 1 2 3 dds....

omg! I had many a cheery night out in Hamamatsu......!
mmmm
wondering if I know your tight git friend...it was a close expat community.. might check with dh who lived in mountains above Hamamatsu (Tenryu)

shubiedoo · 22/04/2008 00:39

Hmm, it is late for you isn't it hana?
I was in Japan from 95-97 too! Did you know a guy called Eoin O'Regan, from Cork? Or an American called "Chas" (I think?) They're the only ones from Shizuoka I know.
I met my husband in Japan too! We got married there! But I convinced him to move to Canada (after 8 years in Ireland!)
I wouldn't have known you in Canada, I'm from New Brunswick originally. But we were definitely in Japan at the same time. Amazing!

shubiedoo · 22/04/2008 00:40

Eoghan, not Eoin.
Sorry for the thread hijack!

hana · 22/04/2008 00:41

not those names. Did you go to Mta or am I making that up?

hana · 22/04/2008 00:41

oh yes, hijack alert!! oops

shubiedoo · 22/04/2008 00:56

YES, how did you know?!

shubiedoo · 22/04/2008 00:56

Hi bloss

Tokyo can be actually really good for kids.
Odaiba is amazing.

General tokyo

Kamakura is indeed lovely and a wee bit cooler than the city (and 5 mins. from where I live!)

I was a JET from 91 to 94 then worked at CLAIR from 94 to 97. Married a local and been here ever since.

Have a great trip!

yurt1 · 22/04/2008 09:07

I was a JET from 92-93 (Hiroshima ken).

I'm quite near Dartmouth too

hana · 22/04/2008 22:29

gawd - shubiedoo, was 93-95 that I was there. think I am wishing years away from my current age . MtA - think we stumbled across this before? I think? I did a BSc and graduated in 92. What about you?

yurt1 - you're also in NS? Wahhhhhhh! It's not fair, I want to be there too! Are you a born and bred Bluenoser then?

hana · 22/04/2008 22:35

yurt - do you mean Dartmouth in Devon?

shubiedoo · 23/04/2008 21:59

Oh, OK, I wss racking my brain trying to remember who was from the Maritimes on the Montreal flight in 95...!
But if you graduated from Mount A in 92, we might know each other anyway, that's also my grad year... I lived in the Maison Francaise.
Maybe we should CAT each other? Dying to know who you are!

hana · 25/04/2008 17:50

hey shubiedoo.....aha! I have a great friend who was also at The French House - am sure you'd def know her!! A-M.C. initials. I am away for the weekend, have lovely lovely hen weekend to go to. Bliss.....no children for 24 hours! I lived in Windsor then was off-campus for a few years. I did a BSc and did a lot of work with SAC and the class exec. Does that ring any bells?! Will figure out CAT stuff when I get back.
