Tipping, is this a thing?

I have just been told by a friend that they leave money every day for the cleaners in a hotel, €5 each day. Is this usual? I’m embarrassed to say I have never left anything for housekeeping, neither daily nor at the end of the holiday.

Tipping is so difficult to get right.

Please share with me what you do.

We leave a tip at the end of the holiday. Not every day.
They don't always clean every day.

Surely it depends where you go. I'm currently in the Dominican Republic and have been tipping $5 to the housekeeping every other day.

If I was in Spain or France I wouldn't tip I don't think.

Depends on tipping culture of the place I'm visiting.

TomatoSandwiches · 20/09/2024 23:33

I leave it everyday because it's rarely the same cleaner at the beginning to the end.

Cooroo · 20/09/2024 23:35

Wow, I've never done this! I used to work weekends as a chambermaid when at school and don't recall ever getting tips.

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/09/2024 23:36

Yes, have always tipped housekeeping when we check out.

StrangeFruits · 20/09/2024 23:38

Of course. I worked as a hotel cleaner in my student days. Tipping is normal.

samarrange · 20/09/2024 23:40

Since most people leave the tip in the room when they check out, the amount is up to you. I don't generally tip for a couple of nights in a city hotel, but I will leave a small amount for a longer stay and/or if I've had some interaction with the cleaner.

Growlybear83 · 21/09/2024 00:06

We've always tipped the cleaners when we check out, but tip bar staff, particularly pool staff, as we go along.

zzplex · 21/09/2024 08:18

I've always left a tip in the room at the end of the stay (probably read about it in guidebooks when I first started going abroad) although I've always thought it unfair that the cleaner who happens to do your room that day gets the whole amount. Maybe that's why your friend is leaving it every day and not at the end. 5 Euros is a lot though.

In Egypt we did every day. In Greece just when we checked out.

mondaytosunday · 21/09/2024 08:39

Yes it is a thing! I always leave a tip for housekeeping.

SometimesCalmPerson · 21/09/2024 08:41

It’s normal to leave housekeeping a tip at the end of a stay. I wouldn’t do it every day, and I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t think they’d done a good job.

This is what towel swans/hearts etc left on beds is all about. Housekeeping are going after a tip.

GreenWheat · 21/09/2024 08:48

Only in the USA. Never have done anywhere else.

2chocolateoranges · 21/09/2024 08:49

If we have the same cleaner all week we leave a tip at the end of the holiday but if it’s a different cleaner each day then we don’t leave a tip.

FloofPaws · 21/09/2024 08:55

Yes in countries where finances aren't great, so Egypt , Caribbean, Cape Verde yes each day and bar staff etc usually 1£ /€$ etc for drinks and a few for housekeeping

Teenagerantruns · 21/09/2024 09:03

We leave tip when we check out on holiday. Wouldn't do it for a night in premier inn though. It's a good way to rid of any local currency we have left that will just sit in a draw forever otherwise.

Zighy1 · 21/09/2024 09:19

Ok that’s interesting, I always tip the bar staff, waiters etc and actually the cleaners do the most important work so going forward I will remember to do this, maybe at the end of the holiday though, say €10. I think €5 a day is a lot and these days who has coins available daily anyway.

I know it’s a whole different matter in the US but t
I generally holiday in Europe.

Thank you.
