Sicily - October half term

We have a week booked in the half term, flying in and out of Palermo. We were planning to stay in Cefalù for the week but I’m nervous that it might be quite long if the weather isn’t playing ball and the sea is too cold to swim in.

One of the DC gets quite bad travel sickness and we prefer not to be on the move too much but does anyone have any ideas as to how to plan our itinerary? I’m toying with the idea of staying in Palermo for a couple of nights before moving to Cefalù but I’m not sure if it’s a good base to see other things because if not, it might be a bit pointless!

I'm looking at the same thing. I was advised that San Vito Lo Capo was nice but the €200 euro taxi ride each way is putting me off and I don't want to be stuck somewhere that doesn't have much to do.

Cefalu and Palermo are great locations and driving is easy if you rent a car. Definitely only a couple of days required in Palermo. There is beach access at Cefalu. I went in October and it was freakishly hot.

I drove west along the coast to as far as Marsala. Lots of lovely towns to stop at - one is of Oceans 11 fame.

I think we will spend the week in Cefalù. The DC have said they’d prefer one location so we’re going to hope for the best that there’s enough for us to do!

Incidentally, this was the ChatGPT itinerary

October in Cefalù offers pleasant temperatures with a chance of sunny days, though some rain is possible. To maximize sunny weather, outdoor activities are planned earlier in the day, and nearby locations are chosen for day trips. This itinerary balances local Cefalù experiences with a few day trips to keep things exciting for the whole family.

Day 1: Arrival in Cefalù & Exploring the Town

  • *Morning:* Arrival and check-in at your accommodation in Cefalù. Choose a place near the beach for great views.
  • *Afternoon: Explore Cefalù's old town. Stroll through the narrow streets, visit the Cefalù Cathedral*, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and take in the Norman architecture.
  • *Late Afternoon: Relax at Lungomare Beach*—the weather in late October is still warm enough for a beach walk, and you might even enjoy a brief swim.
  • *Evening: Dinner at a family-friendly local restaurant, like Ristorante La Brace or Lo Scoglio Ubriaco*, for authentic Sicilian seafood and pizza.

Day 2: Hiking La Rocca & Local Exploration

  • *Morning: Hike up La Rocca* (1.5-2 hours). The hike is manageable for kids and offers stunning panoramic views of Cefalù and the sea. Visit the ruins of the ancient Temple of Diana at the top.
  • *Afternoon: After lunch, head to Lavatoio Medievale*, an ancient laundry carved into the rocks.
  • *Late Afternoon:* Free time to relax or rent bicycles to explore the town's outskirts.
  • *Evening: Try a casual dinner at Pizzeria Al Solito Posto*.

Day 3: Day Trip to Palermo (1 hour by train)

  • *Morning: Catch a train to Palermo*, Sicily’s vibrant capital (1 hour ride).
  • *Late Morning: Explore Palermo's historic center, visiting the Palermo Cathedral, Quattro Canti, and the Piazza Pretoria*.
  • *Lunch: Grab a bite at Ballarò Market*—great for street food and an energetic atmosphere.
  • *Afternoon: Visit the fascinating Palatine Chapel in the Norman Palace or the Catacombs of the Capuchins* for an adventurous outing.
  • *Evening:* Return to Cefalù for dinner.

Day 4: Relaxation Day & Water Activities

  • *Morning: Enjoy a relaxing morning at Lungomare Beach*. End of October may still offer mild sun, and some beachfront rentals have paddleboards or kayaks for families.
  • *Afternoon: Book a boat tour or take a short fishing trip* to enjoy the coastline.
  • *Late Afternoon:* Explore the local shops for Sicilian ceramics and souvenirs.
  • *Evening: Have dinner at Ostaria del Duomo* with a view of the cathedral at night.

Day 5: Day Trip to Madonie Mountains & Castelbuono

  • *Morning: Take a drive (or hire a local guide) to the Madonie National Park* (1-hour drive), an outdoor adventure perfect for hiking and nature walks.
  • *Late Morning: Stop in Castelbuono, a charming mountain village. Visit the Castelbuono Castle*, where kids will enjoy the ancient rooms and medieval stories.
  • *Lunch: Try Fiasconaro*, famous for its artisanal sweets, including Sicilian panettone.
  • *Afternoon:* Explore the nature trails of Madonie Park, which offers a different landscape than the coast and may have some fall foliage by the end of October.
  • *Evening:* Return to Cefalù for a relaxing evening.

Day 6: Cefalù Coast & Optional Cooking Class

  • *Morning: Visit Sant'Ambrogio*, a small village near Cefalù. Enjoy the quiet beach or take a short scenic walk.
  • *Afternoon: Join a Sicilian cooking class* with the kids to learn how to make pizza or pasta, which many local guesthouses or cooking schools offer.
  • *Late Afternoon:* Relax by the beach or pool.
  • *Evening: Enjoy a final Sicilian dinner at Il Normanno or Ti Vitti*.

Day 7: Departure or Flexible Day

  • *Morning:* Depending on departure time, spend your last morning in Cefalù either exploring any missed sights or simply enjoying a leisurely breakfast.
  • *Late Morning/Afternoon: Optionally, take a quick trip to the nearby Torre Caldura*, a scenic spot for some final family photos with beautiful coastal views.

This itinerary balances adventure and relaxation with a focus on enjoying Cefalù’s charm while also offering exciting day trips to Palermo and the nearby Madonie mountains. If you're flexible with weather, the beach and outdoor activities should still be enjoyable at this time of year.

The town is tiny. It won't take long to explore. Honestly I think a week is too long there. Note With the hike there are no toilets or places to buy water once you have paid and go in, so make sure to have a toilet stop for the kids. The cafe at the bottom will make you purchase something to use them.

There is a train between Palmero and Cefalu

Bubugum · 15/09/2024 17:41

That’s useful to know, thanks. We’re looking for a fairly slow paced holiday so was after somewhere beautiful to spend a calm week.

Will think about making it a two-stop trip!
