School fines.

Delonghi88 · 13/09/2024 01:35

So I took my 2 boys to the isle of white during school time now they are treating me with 3 months in prison and a fine of £2500, I also have to go to an interview under caution. My children have over 97% attendance we was only gone for 5 day but they say 10 sessions. And that my children have very poor attendance which is completely untrue. These fines are dished out by social services. My children have never been away ever and suffered so much trauma with their mother they deserve it. I have raised them on my own for the last 7 years had a mental breakdown lost my job and 3 properties gaining custody of them. I will never pay it I will never bend the knee and I will not be blackmailed into giving them money either. Anyone else had this ?

10 sessions because one full day is 2 sessions. AM and PM

What reason did you give the school when they were off ?

If they fine you and you dont pay
You may go to jail

ItWasOnAStarryNight · 13/09/2024 01:39

Could you not just have paid the £160 fine when you got it and saved a load more hassle? You knew you were taking them out for a whole week only days into the new school year, why would you do that anyway?

Delonghi88 · 13/09/2024 01:45

10 sessions is there ammo in technical term but to you and me 5 days is 5 days. The school knows our situation and I did fill in a holiday form it’s not like I just took them away on a whim, I did it because I could never afford to take them away on holiday time. It’s all fixed. I would rather become a matter than bow to the dictatorship of the council in my town esp the social services that never helped me or my children when they were needed the most. And more to the point so if we all paid the £60 it’s all forgotten about ? How does that work then ? It’s blackmail and bribery.

10 sessions is the same as 5 days. Attendance is counted in half days. They are not trying to say that you have been off for 10 days.

Delonghi88 · 13/09/2024 03:48

Sure it was 5 days and morning and afternoon make 2 session of registration for the day. I will fight this on all ends. It’s just another power and control aspect of the government. So if I paid £60 they would wipe there mouths and forget all about it ?? How does that even work surley you can see that. lol it’s like saying to your kid give me 60 notes and I won’t tell mum you ate that chocolate..either way you look at it it’s blackmail from the council to get money for which they have over spent and we have to make up for it.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 13/09/2024 03:57

People treat it as part of the cost of going away in term time (like a tax)

5 full days = 10 sessions because they takes register in the AM and PM (twice a day) so they aren’t trying to trick you with that one.

I would pay the fine before it went up in cost then contact your MP with your thoughts about the rules if you think that they are unfair. Legal action against the current and previous governments will be much more expensive than a school holiday trip.

Delonghi88 · 13/09/2024 03:59

I’ve had my pants pulled down in every way i understand that, but it’s morally wrong and I stand on that

So if you arent going to pay and arent going to listen to people here
What was the point in posting?

But this is the exact problem isn’t it, people that pay will always bow down like good little people. Apologies but I’m not that person.

Go to jail then, I guess. Not sure what your kids will do though?

(You knew the rules and you went ahead - totally entitled to do so but then you have to live with the consequences, which would have been a relatively small fine if you just dealt with it.)

DryBiscuit · 13/09/2024 04:42

You just wanted people to agree with you didnt you

Start some crazy us v school debate

Do you really think they would make 3 children fatherless and put into care over £60. Cmon now lol

You knew the rules so you factor in the fine to the cost of the holiday

Rules.. it’s an act not a law btw

If you're so worried about power and control, why don't you live off the grid and homeschool

Webbymeister · 13/09/2024 05:18

This post is a crock of shit

RainintheDesert · 13/09/2024 05:18

Why didn't you pay the small fine when you had the chance?

Webbymeister · 13/09/2024 05:20

It is the law! Failure to ensure attendance

lol. It’s binary. Was your kid at school? No.

so home educate then

DreamW3aver · 13/09/2024 05:28

You seem to be rather ill informed on term time absence, social services aren't fining you and of course loads of other people have had fines. Everyone knows the risk

It's up to you if you pay but don't be surprised by the consequences, prepare your sad face for the photos

This exactly

cryinglaughing · 13/09/2024 05:38

Make a stand by all means but you knew the consequences of taking them out of school and if you didn't, you must be living under a rock.

You won't win, you will get a hefty fine and possibly prison time.
Do you want to be that principled you deprive your children of a parent for however long you may be sent away?
You need to pay up or shut up.

An Act is a law.

It sounds like you have had a tough time but it's best to pay the fine and contact your MP as pp states. It would relieve a lot of worry and stress.
As for paying the fine and it all being forgotten about. That is essentially how fines work, until you do the same act again then sanctions can be revisited and increase if need be.

Mumdiva99 · 13/09/2024 05:40

Kids are in school for 190 days each year. Out of 365.....
There is plenty of other days to be with them and take them away.
The fines are needed. School attendance is appalling nationally.
No sympathy here.

However....everyone should be political - write to your MP to explain your feelings. Join a political party. Protest if you want.

But not paying the fine probably isn't the best way to do this.

Vanillabourbon · 13/09/2024 05:42

How much money did you save by going in term time? I wouldn't have though it would have been that much more of a cost in the school holidays.
People only usually take their kids out if they are going to save alot & they factor in the fine.
Seems bizarre to let it get this far, although the daily mail might pick up your story if that's what you are hoping for!
