Planning a 4 night trip to Rome beginning of November and have never been on this type of holiday before. Always just been on package holidays where everything is done for you. So feeling quite anxious about all the arrangements etc

Where is the best safe area to stay that’s not an absolute fortune? Looking for somewhere fairly central/easy access to the sites if possible.
And what about transfers to the hotel and back to the airport? Would a taxi be best ( there will be 4 of us)

Thank you

If Jet2 fly from near you they offer great value packages. Stay as central as possible. Sort the hotels by distance from the centre and it will give you an idea.

jazzyBBBB · 08/09/2024 14:00

Also we just got a taxi. I think you can get the train from airport but not sure. No Uber in Rome.

budgiegirl · 08/09/2024 14:01

Any area within the centre is ok, or across into Trastevere. We've been three times - once to the west of Termini (it was fine, but I wouldn't stay over the the east of the station), once near the Jewish Ghetto, and once near the Ponte Sisto bridge. All good locations, but my favourite was near the Ponte Sisto bridge, as it was easy to walk to most of the sights, plus across in Trastevere in the evenings. Prices are probably from about £120 per night for a double room, but of course you can pay much more depending on the hotel.

For transfers, it's depends which airport you are coming in to. From Fiumicino there are frequent trains and buses, and from Ciampino there are buses. But if there's four of you, and not too much luggage, I'd probably get a taxi, or book a private transfer ahead of time. It won't cost that much more than public transport if you are all sharing one taxi, and it's more convenient as it's door to door. But brace yourself, they drive like loonies!

FuckThePoPo · 08/09/2024 14:02

Campo de fiori is where I always stay it's walkable to everything. Yes get a taxi it's a set price and easily accessible.

Makelikeatreeandleaf · 08/09/2024 14:02

If you fly into Ciampino airport, taxis are straight outside to the left. It's a flat fee to the centre of Rome.
As pp said, stay central. Rome is walkable if your mobility is ok - can be very tiring but you see everything much better.

VoyagerOfTheTeenYears · 08/09/2024 14:03

There is Uber in Rome and sharing a taxi between 4 probably works out fine compared to train tickets.

Book things in advance - get your guide worked well for us. Skip the line tickets if you can - it’s a busy place.

ComeTheFckOnBridget · 08/09/2024 14:06

The trains there are great, just get the one from the airport, I had plenty of room for my luggage.

You can cover most of the sites by foot (and in one day if you're fit / hurried) but I would leave half a day for each group of sites

Ie - half day for roman forum & coliseum, another for the piazzas (pantheon, trevi fountain etc) & general exploration and a third for the Vatican

Book tickets and/or tours if it's your first time as you learn so much more that way plus you get queue jumping privileges

Eat all the food
Drink all the wine
Enjoy all the gelato
Have a wonderful time

ComeTheFckOnBridget · 08/09/2024 14:07

For trains btw, you need to stamp your ticket before boarding - don't forget or it won't be valid!

GingerLiberalFeminist · 08/09/2024 14:13

I visit Rome several times a year. I always stay in Pyramide which is train from airport and easy access to centre. 20 min walk to circo maximo and Colluseum. Cheaper than central/north of city centre.

My top tips - Baths of Caracalla are stupendous, the only museum you need to see it Capitolone Museum. You can see most of the Forum without paying entry (unless you're an archaeological buff). Hidden gems are the Keats and Shelley Museum (by Spanish Steps) and the Non Catholic Burial Ground (where Shelly, Goitre and Camierelli are buried among others).
If you like macabre, the Capuchin Monk Museum is a must.
No matter what time of year the Vatican is packed. Book early tickets. No gift shop to speak of.
Villa Buorghese is great for art (rooms by Raphael etc) but pricy.
Pantheon is free as are the churches with Caravaggios.
Most Italians speak some English but Salve and Grazie go a long way.
People eat late in Rome. Be aware most restaurants wont open til 8.30pm and be open till 1-2am.
Breakfast is generally biscuits and pastries not meat and eggs.
The roads are crazy, but cars will stop, albeit with a screech. Especially for a woman.
Be aware random political protests can start at any point anywhere (although it's quite calm at the moment, be aware!)
The Metro shows cooking shows 😂
Buy travel tickets in tabacs (look for a big T on a sign outside a shop). When you get on a tube or bus put it in the machine for stamping.
Trastevere has the best restaurants but gets busy at night.
Lastly, it's HOT! It's still 30° there today. Pack light!

We stayed here and it was an easy walk to absolutely everywhere apart from the Vatican, so took a bus there. We got a coach from the airport and walked from terminii. Didn't use the metro and that seems pickpocketing hotspot - know two careful friends done on there this year. Jostling as doors close and the pickpocket leaps off at least minute. Also lots of building works for Rome 2025 ongoing.

Agree with PP about Capuchin Monastery. Mind blown!

Cynic17 · 08/09/2024 14:24

Everywhere is safe, if you use a bit of common sense.
But I would avoid staying near the station, as it's not particularly pretty.
I would say that a hotel near the Pantheon is an ideal, central location.
Either get a taxi from the airport, or ask your hotel to send a car for you. Make sure you specify which airport - there are two!
If you stay centrally, you can walk everywhere - I have been to Rome 8 or 9 times and never used the underground.
Book main sights - eg Coliseum - at least 4 weeks in advance; everything is online. But don't pack in too much - you also want time to just wander around back streets, sit in a piazza with a coffee etc.
You absolutely won't see everything in 4 days, so be selective and know that you can return again and again in future.

Such a great city to walk around. Make sure you book a Roma pass or Rome Tourist card and pre book anything you may really want to see.

We stayed near the Spanish Steps and very close to the British Embassy. We caught the coach from the airport to the Termini and walked. Immediate Termini area is a bit grotty, but you soon walk away from it. We walked everywhere and covered huge distances, but you find some real gems and the hotel by the British Embassy was near a few great, very reasonable, restaurants (not the usual pizza tourist type). There is so much to see, first time you walk and then next spend time in the queues. Have a good map, which will show the main attractions and everywhere you go there is something to look at. Good walking shoes, definitely not sandals, a bag close to the body and enjoy, just as safe as anywhere I've been and we found street markets and areas off the main tourist areas, but means you get a better view of the city. We particularly loved crossing over to the Vatican side and using the cafes / bakeries that the workers used and the gellato, yum!

Oh we are doing 2 nights in Naples and 3 in Rome in October, flying into Ciampiano then getting the train to Naples then train back to Rome. DH is in charge of hotels so I don’t k ow where we will end up!

They've recently started charging for entry to the Pantheon, I believe, but worth it because its incredible (imo)

GettingStuffed · 08/09/2024 17:54

We're going to Rome for the 6 Nations in February most of this info has been really useful . I'm just hoping my arthritis won't be in a flare up when I go.

Spottyscrunchie · 08/09/2024 18:56

Thanks everyone. I’ll take all of your advice on board.

I’m such a wuss when it comes to doing stuff like this but I’ve always wanted to go. One of our group will be flying in from another airport as well so I’m thinking about coordinating things with her as well.

Someone on here recommended it so we downloded the app and listened to all of the Rick Steves podcast for self guided walking tours of Rome. I think there were 6 or 8. He recommends stop off for gelato, coffee or dinner but of course if you spot somewhere on the way you can just pause and stop. We both downloaded the app and had ear pods and started the recording at the same time so we could walk and listen at the same time.

We used the Lime bikes and electric scooter which were great fun and quicker than walking. i am pretty sure we just used our Uber app but cant quite remember. But you are in the traffic, so may not suit if you have non drivers in your party. We found the city centre traffic was much quieter (literally, and also numbers wise) than we were expecting, but we were ther in late January so I am not sure if that made a difference.

VanCleefArpels · 09/09/2024 12:19

We did a long weekend in Rome this year booked through BA Holidays which was cheaper than booking flight abd hotel separately. Train from Fiumicino very easy. Stayed near central train station and pretty much walked everywhere with one metro ride to Spanish Steps. Really easy to navigate, never felt unsafe in the evenings.

Ensconcedinvelvet · 09/09/2024 16:00

I wrote some (i think useful) ideas but for some reason my response is hidden 'until MNHQ can have a look at it'. :( it's been like that for 24hrs.

Oriunda · 14/09/2024 22:34

Last time we visited, we stayed by the Colosseum, great location and next to the metro. The metro system is pretty decent and runs from Fiumicino; and you can pay with your contactless card, so no worrying about buying or stamping tickets. Ditto the buses.

We loved the Basilica San Clemente, Piazza Navona and the Fori. The Bocca della Verita is fun (and free). Nothing beats going for a late night stroll and coming across the Fontana Di Trevi.

FMH · 16/09/2024 08:17

We went last year and booked everything independently. It's easy to get a taxi from the airport to the centre. We stayed at Hotel Canada, not far from Termini and thought it was great. They have family rooms for 4 people, good breakfast and reasonable rates for Rome. The nearest metro was a 2min walk from the hotel. As others have said, be sure to book tickets for the Colosseum and Vatican well in advance.
