Hi, can anyone help with suggestions for a 5 day trip to Hong Kong as a stop after a trip to Australia. We have teenagers age 16 m & 18 f and will be there from 30 Dec. Wondering if we should leave Hong Kong and visit somewhere nearby while we have the chance? Many thanks

We stayed in Hong Kong over Christmas one year and had a wonderful time. The weather was pleasant at that time of year and we really enjoyed it. This was about 8 years ago now, so things have probably changed a bit.

In no particular order:

  1. Star ferry across the Harbour and funicular to The Peak on a clear day. We walked down through the Mid Levels. Nice to have a wander around HK Island, can also go to Clearwater Bay or take an old tram from Central or Admiralty
  2. Ngong Ping cable car to Lantau Island and visit the Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery. Maybe add in a trip to Tai O to see and old HK fishing village
  3. Stanley Market for souvenir shopping, Discovery Bay also nice
  4. Markets on Kowloon side, Ladies Market, Fa Yuen Market
  5. Tsim Sha Tsui side - walk along Victoria Harbour, shopping along Nathan Road
  6. Can take a ferry to another island, I like Lamma (pedestrianised), Cheung Chau is also nice
  7. Nightlife in Lan Kwai Fong
  8. If they are still interested in theme parks, I like Ocean Park the best

I would happily spend two weeks in HK!

Oh, if you wanted to leave HK, you could do a day trip to Macau?

HK is an amazing place to visit. 5 days isn’t enough!

So jealous spent 4 days in HK last year and would go back in a heart beat

Basically Zhk3 suggests

Metro and the trams are really easy to navigate. And it's just an amazing city

Stanley Market for breakfast or lunch on the beach and a wander (if you get the bus there you pass Repulse Bay and some gorgeous views). From Stanley take the bus to Aberdeen Harbour and get a ride round the harbour on a sampan(?). Then get a bus from there to Central and get another bus up to the Peak for sunset and watch all the lights gradually come on. I prefer the bus up as it winds round and round the mountain on the way up with spectacular views, that you just don’t get on the tram/funicular (get it down to tick the box).

Another option for Lantau is to get the ferry from Central across and take the bus up to the Buddha.

Zhx3 · 08/09/2024 09:11

Sorry, I meant Repulse Bay, not Clearwater Bay! Two different places.

It’s been a few years since I was in HK , but with teens you might want to try the Golden Computer centre / Arcade at Sham Shui Po MTR.. Totally bonkers, full on , overcrowed and noisy but an authentic / unique HK experience ! It’s where you can wonder at the latest technology out of Chinese factories or go into the basement where there are a million and one mobile / gaming / laptop accessories and parts for cheap prices. Think multiple crowded market stalls with a 3 ft aisle rather than a modern shopping centre though!

You could also consider a day trip to Shenzhen .. similarly not quiet but you can visit the full on market type shopping centres just over the border in China.

As others have said but want to add the night market on Kowloon (really good food!) and the mid level escalators. There is so much to do
In Hong Kong and you will easily fill these days!

I agree, there is plenty to do/eat/see & it is a great destination in its own right, although a lot of people see it as just a stopover spot,
I went a couple of times pre children and I’ve always wanted to take them for a holiday there.
sadly I don’t fancy the long flight with them though 😂

Wow thanks so much everyone, so glad I asked. Any hotel recommendations? Thinking it would be good to be near where we can see the New Year fireworks. The hotels in TST are a lot more expensive and we need two rooms or a suite and wondering if it might be a bit manic in that area anyway ?Currently looking at iclub AMTS near the Macau ferry terminal.

Back in 2012, we stayed in the YMCA next to the Peninsula. It had a great view over the bay. Really clean and well looked after. Access to the pool. And we had a bedroom for the kids as well as our own. Highly recommended, assuming they've kept up the customer experience.

The children were 6 & 8 at the time @Longday24 . They loved the long flight. Screens, food and drink on tap. What more could they want?

We stayed in a hotel on Hong Kong island near Causeway Bay and they had suites which they upgraded us to. Transport links are so good so it does not matter where you stay as long as you are close to a MTR station. We had the trams next to the hotel so it was great

Takoneko · 08/09/2024 15:30

We stayed at Lanson Place in Causeway Bay. We got a real bargain and were hugely impressed by how amazing the hotel was for what we paid. It may not be quite such a steal now, but we found it really good value. They had suites. We weren’t in a suite but did get a free upgrade to a corner room with windows on two sides. We were prepared for hotel rooms in Hong Kong to be tiny but it was a huge room.

Zhx3 · 08/09/2024 16:50

You won't see fireworks but we stayed in the Royal Plaza Hotel in Mong Kok. It's attached to the Moko mall which is very convenient, and it's great for public transport. Nice swimming pool and will be a bit more authentic than staying in the more touristy areas in TST.

That said, I've also stayed in what's now the Regent Hotel in TST. The view was amazing! The buffets were better in the Shangri-La in TST East though.
