Antigua in august

We’re keen to visit the Caribbean but are weary of hurricane season! I know July is shoulder season, which suits us, but does anyone have any experience of going to Antigua in July?

*edited it because i meant July but mistakenly put August!

I wouldn't recommend it, sorry to say.

We did a 2 centre with Barbados - week in each - around 15 years ago and the rain was awful on both islands.

Mosquitoes and sand flies were dreadful too but at least the Barbados hotel. - Colony Club - treated the pools and their beach area whereas the Antigua hotel - Cove Suites at Blue Waters - did nothing.
One day all the pools were closed at Blue Waters due to mosquito infestation and when the sun eventually came out for a short while on Antigua we were eaten alive by sand flies on the beach.

Then to top it off everything was closed due to it being low season. We drove to English Harbour and Shirley Heights one day and we were the only people there.

We flew out around the 20 August if that helps. Both islands are lovely but I would most definitely visit at a different time of year.

So sorry I replied before you edited to July.

Hopefully someone will come along who has been during July.

Thanks so much - that's really helpful to know! It would be quite a large amount of money (for us) to spend so would hate to go somewhere that wasn't enjoyable.

I wouldn't do it. The Met Office is predicting an unusually bad hurricane season this year. Even if the storm doesn't land right on Antigua, you get the blow-back of wind and rain from the general area.

We’ve pivoted! Now considering Mauritius - also off season but hopefully less large-weather-event prone and still a pleasant place to be

Our summer is also Winter in Mauritius, it can get quite windy.

Why not stick to short haul in (our) summer and save the long hauls to go when they are at their best?

We don’t cope well with heat so slightly cooler temperatures would suit, although not too cold! We’ve been going to Europe in June/october as it’s more bearable then.

I’ve read that the south and east can be windy but I’m hoping the north and west is more sheltered. It’s hard to gauge as people have different tolerances but would be good to have first hand experiences if possible!
