Toilet rolls in Greece.

Is it true you cannot put toilet rolls in the toilets? If so what happens if you do? I can't imagine the children would remember to put it in a bin as it's so automatic to put it in the toilet. What if you have done a poo? Sounds a bit eew.

Yep, you have to put it in the little bin - you finally get used to it by the end of the holiday, then you get back to the UK and sit holding your toilet roll looking for the bin - doh!

But if you do a poo, wont it smell until they empty the bins? Thinking of Dh's poo makes me shudder.

Yep - but they empty the bins daily so It's not too bad. You could always take nappy bags if you're worried.

technics · 18/04/2008 21:29

I don't know about Greece but this was the case when I went to Cyprus in 2000. Take some cheap scented nappy bags with you to put the tissue in, tie up and place in the bin. Hey presto!

SlightlyMadSweet · 18/04/2008 21:31

Use nappy bags.

Kids will love oit as it is novel

MegGriffin · 18/04/2008 21:32

I think it's just getting used to the idea. Glad we are not sharing with another family Its bad enough with my lot. (of course my poo does not smell)

Nappy bags are a great idea.

Well you could start practising at home ???

SlightlyMadSweet · 18/04/2008 21:36

I think you should also take some Andrex with you.

IIRC they can be stingy with it and it is expensive.

The locals all use the bidet.

MegGriffin · 18/04/2008 21:42

Thanks SlightlyMadSweet, will take on board all your suggestions. I can see now why they use a bidet, especially with a messy poo. Shudders again with goose bumps.

In Rhodes it is strictly paper in the bin!! You do get used to it. We take baby wipes and use them. The bins are emptied every day though. We were there in June last year in the middle of the heatwave they had. We didn't have any nasty niffs because of the toilet paper - so - I reckon you will be fine.

suedonim · 18/04/2008 21:57

Some of the loos here in Nigeria have bins as did almost all in Indonesia, (some of those loos were 'squatters, as well!) but they don't smell particularly bad.

Using nappy sacks is a bad idea, imo, for environmental reasons.

PollyLogos · 19/04/2008 10:09

Yep, sorry but everywhere you go, you will have to put used toilet paper in a bin at the side of the toilet. Its because they use narrow bore pipes here (in case you wondered )

You'll get used to it, the kids will find it novel and it doesn't smell. I'm so used to it now (been here 23 years) that when I go back to the uk I always sit there looking for the bin

shabster · 19/04/2008 12:39

Polly - where abouts are you? Nosey pig aren't I

PollyLogos · 19/04/2008 17:59

I'm in Athens shabster. Been here so many years i swear I am more than 50% greek!!!

shabster · 19/04/2008 19:40

I am of you. We always went to Spain and Majorca on holiday and then 7 years ago we got 2 weeks in Faliraki for about 50p for the three of us Faliraki was going through an awful time with the 18-30's clubs and nobody was booking.

Within a few hours of arriving the owner and his family were treating us like long lost relatives. In June we will return for the 8th holiday - some say boring but it feels like our paradise. It is a little like Blackpool with sunshine but we go back for the Greek people. We are in touch weekly with the bar staff and cannot wait to return.

Oh now I am daydreaming and missing my Greek family.
