Cabin crew - is turbulence getting worse?

I have always been a bit of a nervous but still frequent flyer. Recently I keep reading about terrible experiences with turbulence and seeing it in the news with the recent Singapore and corfu flights. Should I be worried? I’m flying with next week with my 2 year old son.

No, you'll be fine. Just keep your seatbelts on for the flight.

As a rule of thumb, if something makes headlines, it's not very common, nor is it very likely to happen to you.

Severe turbulence is extremely rare. Even if it doubled over the next 5 years, which is not going to happen, it would still be extremely rare, but the media would get to go "OMG turbulence had doubled!!!!!".

Understanding stuff like this is an important part of living a less anxious life in an age where we all get bombarded with news and "news" 24/7.

This is a really good way of thinking about things thank you, I often despair at the news!

Yes, my understanding is that turbulence is getting worse due to climate change.

CherryBlossom321 · 03/09/2024 22:04

I’ve read about this. Research is suggesting it is, will continue to become more common and significant due to climate change. There was moderate turbulence on my flight in May, which I had dreaded. However, it wasn’t the horrific experience I’d imagined. Uncomfortable, but fine.

Increasing temperatures are bound to make it worse. It's just physics

I do t think it's anything to worry about safety wise though

Gloriiaa · 03/09/2024 22:26

Nope

ThereIsIron · 03/09/2024 22:37

No. I was on a plane Thursday and Sunday past and there was no turbulence

Yes and it was cold yesterday so global warming is obviously fake news.

Oh well, that's ok then! It can't be true. 🙄🙄🙄

Are you cabin crew?

Flittingaboutagain · 03/09/2024 23:24

I did an anxious flyer course with an airline. t is predicted to get worse yes. But it's being considered in the aviation industry. My understanding from the course is it isn't a risk to planes, only passengers from open overheard lockers, using the toilet/no seatbelts etc. The safest thing you can do is stay seated as much as possible.

Mickeyanonymouse · 03/09/2024 23:53

Actually I do think it is , sorry. However it's the route from the far east that is particularly bad for this. Severe turbulence had always happened and it doesn't always make the headlines. I personally don't find transatlantic routes any worse.
Anecdotally Heathrow seems to be windy so often these days, that never used to be the case. That is just my experience though.

Wingingit1989 · 04/09/2024 09:48

Thanks everyone. I am flying from Heathrow to Thessaloniki. It will be hard to keep a seatbelt on my son but i will try!
