How was it?
Also how do you get there from London?

I haven't been, but: Since it's a French colony, the best way to get there is probably via Paris.

Use Skyscanner, but here's a tip: Don't just ask for Paris-Papeete, on the basis that it will be simpler and you can add on London-Paris yourself. Also ask for London-Papeete (or Manchester-Tahiti, etc) and compare. Quite often when you start at a less obvious point (which, for Tahiti, London is), the flight is cheaper with the extra leg, because the airlines know that people starting from London will also be looking at, say, Qantas to Sydney or Singapore Airlines, whereas people starting from Paris may book Air France on autopilot.

A good connecting point for Tahiti is Los Angeles.

One possible flight combination is Virgin from Heathrow to Los Angeles and then Air France/Air Tahiti Nui.

I did think that Air New Zealand flew LHR to Tahiti but that must have lapsed since I last looked.

I was considering Tahiti myself a while ago.

What has prompted you to look for a holiday there?

TikehauLilly · 02/09/2024 02:24

We went via LA then air tahiti

The stopover in LA was quite long (but only one that worked given the AT flight times) and our TA said they suggested booking an airpot hotel which we did and worked perfectly. Return I can't help with much as we flew back to LA then drove to Napa, SF etc before home.

Tahiti was amazing - we did 4 islands. Well worth it. Will go back one day.

Look at turquoise holidays (if in uk)

Bora bora. Over water bungalow. Amazing!! Morea is nice too, but Bora Bora is nicer.

TikehauLilly · 02/09/2024 02:39

Bora bora is a must I agree with previous poster.

How much time to spend on each island an what ones you want to visit depends what you want to do/ see experience so research it. There are loads.

BB you are there for the over water bungalow lagoon view! Phenomenal

Hi we went with BA - direct flight from London to LA, then LA onto Tahiti. As others have said you should go to Bora Bora. It's only 45 mins on the plane from Tahiti. You'd be massively missing out otherwise.

I would also recommend going to another island called Moorea. You can get the ferry over (30 mins). We stopped there for 5 nights and there is so much to do there. It was a lovely place. Went to Bora Bora after that for 5 nights.

My brother is a pilot and aeronautical engineer who has to sometimes stay there with his job. He said the main tourist bits are pretty but the rest of it is crushingly impoverished and it's as boring as boring gets. Ok if all you want to do is lie in the sun .

So they'd welcome tourism? I've been to a couple of South Sea islands and agree they are a bit boring but they're beautiful too in a can't quite believe it way

Xyz1234567 · 02/09/2024 20:50

I am not expressing any opinion, merely passing on what my brother just said. I have never, and probably will never, go there!

@noreasonbehindit

I thought of your post when I was browsing through a Trailfinders Cruise brochure earlier today, OP.

One of the holidays in the brochure is a cruise around French Polynesia. It starts with a short stay in San Francisco then moves to Tahiti, where you stay for a few days before boarding a cruise ship which takes you to Moorea, Bora Bora etc.

That might be a good option for you. It does sound very nice!

And swim and snorkel or go diving in spectacular seas, other water sports, enjoy nice meals, watch a cultural show, we did a 4 wheel drive in the bush. It's a relaxing holiday, as any holiday in a tropical island is. There's not loads to do, but I'd hardly call it boring as boring gets 😅

DecafDodger · 05/09/2024 09:50

Yes I've been to French Polynesia. Flew through LA. I agree with pp that don't just stay in Tahiti, goto some smaller islands, they are so much prettier. Bora Bora is gorgeous.

notimagain · 05/09/2024 09:59

If it’s still operating one option might be via Paris (Orly) with Frenchbee (low cost arm of Air France).

Last time I looked it was a direct flight (so no aircraft change) with a tech stop in San Francisco.
