Lanzorote holiday travel

We've recently booked a holiday to Lanzarote, baby will be 11 months when we travel. We're going to drive to the airport and park for the week so we are ok for car seat for this part of the journey but just thinking about the transfers over there. Has anyone had coach transfers with a baby? Do they just sit on your lap like they would on the plane?

Thansk in advance for any advice/tips on this! 🥰

Can't you take your car seat with you?

Tiff34 · 01/09/2024 19:51

@TwigTheWonderKid i didn't know that was an option. Do I need to check with the airline and pay for it as extra baggage? Or is this the norm that you can take them?
Thanks

Typically if you travel with a baby you can check in with a stroller/ pushchair and a car seat/ car seat bag for no additional charge. But check the rules for the airline you have selected

I think it really depends upon the airline so probably best to check direct.

Although there's not a huge amount of traffic on Lanzarote I don't think it's worth taking the chance as I've seen a few nasty accidents there.

Depends on the airline whether they charge…..but yes definitely take if you can

You can take your own car seat with you (usually for free), but don't expect to be allowed to use it on the coach. Many coaches only have lap belts, so unless your car seat can be secured with a lap belt you won't be able to use it anyway. You could try checking with your travel company but they'll probably just say they don't know what sort of seatbelts the coach will have. Also if the infant is travelling for free with no booked seat on the plane, you might find there is no seat for them on the coach anyway.

The best option is to pay for a taxi transfer instead then fit your own car seat. You could hire a car seat from the taxi company but you won't know what you'll get or what condition it will be in. We hired a car in Lanzarote and they gave our 11 month old a very old forward facing car seat which I suppose is better than sitting on a lap but not ideal.

That said, we always just opt for sitting baby on our lap on the coach. I don't want to risk putting a car seat in the hold (you could buy a cheap one you don't mind getting lost/damaged and make sure it's well wrapped in a box and bubble wrapped) and it's just more stuff to lug about and clutter the hotel room. On balance of probabilities, a coach is less likely to crash than a taxi and you are more likely to survive. So it's up to you and what risk you are willing to take.
