Is there much to do in Prague in January?

Thinking of booking a few days in Prague in January as a birthday treat and just wondered if there's much to do once you've seen the beautiful architecture? I believe the Christmas markets will still be on but even these have limits. I'm used to warm holidays where you can spend a morning or evening chilling outside in the sunshine! I'm a pretty active person and like to be doing stuff and would be a wee bit concerned we're going to end up at a bit of a loose end sometimes. Also is it reasonable enough to eat there? On a bit of a budget but don't mind paying for a few trips. Any advice/recommendations/thoughts on Prague in general are very welcome! Thanks

We’ve been at the time of year, and had a super time. Though the markets were our least favourite bit.
We bought a 9 Towers ticket, and went up all the towers, including one that was a Cold War spy listening post in a church. We also took a day trip by train to Kutna Hora to see the ossuary and cathedral. We also like to go on a hunt for all David Czerny sculptures dotted all over the city.
We’ve been a few times and never get bored of it.
if you need a accommodation recommend we love the Mooo downtown apartments.

There's loads to see. Sign up for some free walking tours. We did a fab one of the castle district last time we were there. You can do a self-guided tour of the Jewish Quarter too. It's not as cheap as it used to be but there are some lovely cosy bars and restaurants. Wear layers as it's normally perishingly cold out but very warm indoors.

Thanks that all sounds amazing! Just also wondering is it better to stay in the old town or the new town? Is it much of a walk into the old town if we stay in the new town?

There is so much to do. There are loads of museums. The most fun one, if you like modern art, is the David Cerny Mausoleum. There are also lots of walks; such as walking up to Letna park via the metronome and then across to the castle from there. Also, the Vysehrad walk is lovely. If you like hiking, there are walks at Divoka Sarka. There is also an indoor water park called Aquapalace. The TV tower near Jiriho z Podebrad is worth a visit.

Regarding food, there are loads of great places. There is a large Vietnamese community and their restaurants are usually cheap. There is also a restaurant called Bab Ryze (Korean), which is amazing. Just don’t eat at the tourist places and you will be fine.

I doesn’t really matter where you stay as it’s not a huge city and the public transport is great.

Feel free to ask any other questions as I know the city well.

I've been a couple of times in wintertime. It's so atmospheric, and without the crowds in summer.

We stayed in an apartment near the castle on Vlasska (sp?). We took time to just wander, interspersed by visits to cafes and bars. (Spot the random statue of Winston Churchill in a side street!). The Jewish quarter is definitely worth a visit. We went to a candlelit concert in one of the synagogues which was brilliant.

It's over 10 since I was last in Prague, but it's one of my favourite cities. Would love to go back!

I went with a friend in February and it was lovely. The Old Quarter is really nice. The big square -can't remember it's name- was still busy despite the time of year. Charles bridge is so lovely. We did a river cruise which was very nice. Lots of lovely cafés and restaurants. The theatre was open but we didn't manage a visit. Nearby is a café with incredible toilets for women. I know, pretty niche, but honestly they were amazing. We found loads to do and see.

It was when we went! Minus 18c during the day. But it's a dry cold - as long as you wrap up, it's fine. And the pubs and cafes are soooo warm, you need to peel layers off anyway.
