Follow UK NHS guidance on food
Greece is good for food. Lots of grilled fish, chicken, salads etc

RichardMarxisinnocent · 01/09/2024 08:42

Is there anything specific you're worried about? I'm vegetarian so didn't eat meat/fish/chicken in Greece, but did eat whatever else I fancied from restaurant menus. I had no idea there were things to be careful of, but perhaps they are non vegetarian foods.

Theleaveswillbefalling · 01/09/2024 08:42

All the amazing food. I love Greek food. Like the PP says look but the NHS guidelines but there is very little you can’t eat eg swordfish.

Andwegoroundagain · 01/09/2024 08:43

Umm. It's a normal country in Europe. Eat all the lovely food! Everything sold in restaurants generally edible ! Just ask for meat well cooked

Hohofortherobbers · 01/09/2024 08:45

My midwife warned me that often feta, Greek yoghurt and ice cream is unpasteurised and therefore a listeria risk. However as someone who's travelled to Greece multiple times without illness I decided it was a risk I'd take and ate as per normal.

Hohofortherobbers · 01/09/2024 08:47

The water is safe for you, but the mineral content can make it unpalatable. So you'll probably prefer bottled water unless your area has a town tap....drinking water from a spring and tastes fine

RichardMarxisinnocent · 01/09/2024 08:56

I've just re-read the OP and realised that the world pregnant is missing after 14 weeks 3 days. In which case ignore me as I wasn't pregnant when I was in Greece.

Scottishskifun · 01/09/2024 09:10

I was 20 weeks when I went on holiday to Greece.
I ate most things and it was delicious! The only things I didn't eat was swordfish, cured meats (this will depend on where you go we were in Crete which has some specialties) and I didn't have the soft cheeses which there are a few of.

Drinks no iced coffee/coffee (it's very strong)

probster · 01/09/2024 09:52

just follow NHS
its really clear

Edingril · 01/09/2024 10:01

Greek people eat food there I presume why? are you an alternate species of human?

What about mosquito and repelleant - can we use anyone ??

I ate everything except swordfish. Even had a small glass of wine on a tour of a vineyard. You don't need to think about it any more than of you were at home.

I'm not aware of any issues about mosquito repellent but you need to just go to Boots and read the labels. They'll tell you if you can't use it.

You shouldn't use anything which is above 50% deet.

If you want to avoid deet all together then there are a few brands which don't have it in including a baby safe one called Vie you can get it on amazon.
You can use the insect repellent bands as well. We had one on the wrist and one on the ankle in Turkey and didn't get a single mosquito bite apart from DH which didn't wear them!

Exactly it's a normal European country where you can eat (subject to your own personal preferences) pretty much everything.

With the one exception of Marmite (assuming you can even find it) which as everyone knows is the creation of Satan.

buttonsB4 · 01/09/2024 11:00

The water from the taps isn't always drinkable - depends which bit of Greece you're in.

For example, Crete - you can drink tap water, some of the smaller islands you can't.

Make sure you check when you arrive at where you're staying or just drink bottled to be safe.

Peonies12 · 01/09/2024 11:02

Just look at NHS advice: it’s exactly the same as you’d eat here. And it’s advice, not the law! I went on holiday to Greece at 20 weeks and found it very easy to eat

Always buy insect repellent abroad. The ones we get here are awful, they all have deet in them.

The ones you get abroad like Autan have much more modern ingredients in them so it doesn’t feel like you’re fumigating yourself.

What a strange post.

Henleylady · 01/09/2024 11:24

Ahh - you are pregnant! Just follow the advice like at home.

UK guidelines often tell PG women to avoid certain foods, many of which are more common in other countries, such as unpasteurised cheeses, pates, certain seafood. If this is OP’s first PG, she will be naturally cautious. Your dismissive tone possibly isn’t helpful.

Dreamingofretirement · 01/09/2024 11:26

I go to Greece a couple of times a year, always self catering never all inclusive. I don’t drink and I try to eat in local tavernas rather m than tourist restaurants. I have never, ever, ever had so much as a dodgy tummy, the food in Greece is incredible, all inclusives should be banned there the local food is just so good

Henleylady · 01/09/2024 11:36

I think PP aren't realising the OP is pregnant and it was a bit obscure.

DEET is not harmful but it's horrible (oily, smells nasty, and melts plastic). Use a brand where the active ingredient is Picaridin, sometimes called Icaridin, which is a lot less nasty. Also buy a plug-in device (a brand like Raid or Bloom) for overnight when you get there, if the accommodation doesn't provide one.

The water will be safe to drink in a purely bacteriological sense but it tastes horrible almost everywhere.

Most food will be OK. The Greeks don't tend to serve meat done pink and your basic feta in salad at a taverna won't be an upmarket unpasteurised brand.
