Insurance post Myocarditis ??

I'd like to travel. No health issues at all except recent Myocarditis (1st July). Cancelled holiday then (insurance paid) Heart now fine. No meds except low dose of betablocker. Can I get insurance to fly/cruise in October? Or December? Would I need a GP / Consultant's Letter please ?

Remember that if your destination is within the EU (give or take) you can get a GHIC, which will do all the heavy lifting if you get ill while on the trip. Obviously you would still want travel insurance for cancellation (if they will cover you for cancellation due to flare-up of the myocarditis) but the GHIC will take care of the medical side in Europe.

@samarrange Thank you. I live in Scotland so don't know if I can get a GHIC as I don't have the NHS App?

I'm not sure how I'd find out who would cover me for travel insurance either?

(a bit hopeless I know but I've not travelled for many years. I used a travel agent for my had-to-be-cancelled trip & they just left me to sort it all out)

Staysure are good as long as you're discharged from your consultant and now awaiting follow up or surgery

Sorry that should read 'not' instead of 'now'

All Clear are pretty good for covering for pre existing conditions, but have to declare very carefully, and it isn't cheap. It's some years since I had probably myocarditis, but they were who covered me for my next holiday afterwards.

GHIC seems to be organised by the English NHS for the whole UK. See https://www.nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/healthcare-abroad/apply-for-a-free-uk-global-health-insurance-card-ghic/

No idea about travel insurance, sorry.

Applying for healthcare cover abroad (GHIC and EHIC)

Find out if you're eligible to apply for a new UK EHIC or UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC).

Travel insurance you can find online. Google insurance for pre-existing conditions.

GHIC will cover you for treatment but not repatriation. You’ll still need travel insurance for that.

GHIC does not cover treatment on board cruise ships (plus it won’t cover things like emergency repatriation) so don’t rely on just that.

GHIC covers the whole of the UK, you can apply online and they send you the plastic card.

Companies like Staysure will cover pre-existing conditions, just make sure you declare everything and ensure that you have cruise coverage (this is often an add on).

Good point, I had missed the "cruise" bit. 🙏

(Although if the cruise is in the Mediterranean or Baltic or Norway, the GHIC will work in port!)

Veteran of medical insurance here.
Pretty much any insurance company would give you a quote as long as you are not awaiting investigations. Specialists like Staysure are very expensive and may suit people with multiple conditions.
Look on a travel insurance comparison site. Once on there tick yes to pre existing conditions and be truthful. They will want to know everything you have seen a doctor for in the last year or two plus any heart or cancer however long ago.
The GHIC is available to anyone in the UK just go on the gov website. But do not rely on it, get insurance as well. It's fine for minor illnesses if you can find a NHS equivalent clinic but serious unpredictable stuff you need travel insurance.

I used "insure & go" and was quoted £491 for a years policy for whole of world excluding USA&Canada. My husband (65) has coronary artery disease (picked up on a research project) and slightly high cholesterol. I declared menopause (I'm 61) as I'm on hrt but not sure that adds anything to the policy.

I think as long as you have a diagnosis it's easier. It's just when you are under investigation that they don't like to insure.

Try putting your details into a few sites and see what it says. They won't want a letter from your doctor as they use particular questions and it depends on the answers. There's no common sense in insurance unfortunately. I'm medical and despair at some of the questions.

Good luck.

Agree you MUST get cruise cover, GHIC will cover you in port in the EU but not for costs incurred if you cannot return to the ship or for your fellow travellers who stay with you, cruise ships have medical facilities but they are private and you will be billed for them and worst case scenario you have to be airlifted off the ship the costs could rocket.
