Majorca in October half term

Am I mad to be considering this? Have 2 teens and fancy a long weekend away in the half term to hopefully get some sunshine and to allow husband and son to do some cycling.

Has anyone been to Majorca in late October? Will it still be warm? ( I don’t mind wearing a cardigan or jacket in the evening as long as it’s warm enough to sit out in the daytime with a book!) Will the restaurants still be open or is it out of season? Thanks!

I have been (a long time ago). It wasn't very nice, out of season, lots of places closed and quite chilly.

DarkForces · 30/08/2024 16:55

We did. Weather was mixed. Had some proper rain and gorgeous sunshine. Had a great time though

WonderingWanda · 30/08/2024 16:55

I've been, it was like British summer, mostly shorts and t shirts but with a jumper and possible rainshowers. Not really sunbathing weather but perfectly nice. If you want warmer sun try Tenerife or Morroco.

Rory17384949 · 30/08/2024 17:24

I wouldn't, lots of places will be closed. I would think you'd be better off going to southern Spain - I went to Seville in late October and it was lovely, British summer kind of weather, we had a couple of days near the beach too.

Twilightstarbright · 30/08/2024 17:28

Lanzarote might be better- hotels we have stayed in have bike shortage rooms so clearly a popular pursuit!

samarrange · 30/08/2024 19:45

You will be OK if you stay in Palma, which never closes. (Palma town proper, not Playa de Palma.)

A lot of the coastal towns shut with a bang on the last Saturday in October even though the weather is increasingly often nice into the first couple of weeks in November. One or two hotels stay open through the winter, but places like Palmanova and Cala d'Or are a bit grim when three quarters of the shops and restaurants are shut.

You can expect 23–25° at 1pm and you can eat outside in the evenings with a jacket. But remember that sunset is before 6pm. It's also starting to be good cycling weather.

Palma itself is beautiful in the cooler times.
lots of great restaurants.
lots of lovely places to wander.
When it’s sunny you’ll happily be in tee and shorts, but in the evening you can wear actual clothes but rarely a jacket.

I’ll be there.

I’ve been twice at October half term. Shorts & t shirt during the day and jeans and pullover to eat in part-covered at night, mainly. I’d not hesitate.

longdistanceclaraclara · 30/08/2024 20:01

It will be closed / closing down for the season. Weather could be ok, could be shit. Pools will be cold.

CheeryUser · 30/08/2024 20:02

I go just pre or post season quite often for cycling and the weather is often hit and miss but there is still enough open etc to make it worth your while.

BighairandIdontcare · 30/08/2024 20:06

Ooh mixed responses! I’m happy with low 20’s t-shirt weather, just don’t want it to be cold and rainy. We were actually thinking of staying in Porto Pollensa (I think that’s how it’s spelled, sorry if incorrect!) as we’ve been there for a day trip before and really liked it there. I want to be near a beach and husband and teen wants to cycle!

i don’t fancy Morocco at all and am a bit bored with Canary Islands. I will look at Seville though (although is there cycling there?)Thanks everyone so far!

Pollensa is lovely the last week of October. Whenever I've been the weather's been great. I like it when it starts getting quieter. But it's the very end of the tourist season so some places may be starting to close up.

It's "Port de Pollença" in Catalan and "Puerto Pollensa" in Spanish. Or just "PP". 😎

PP doesn't close down perhaps quite as much as the other seaside places, since it has a bit of a permanent population (unlike, say, Playa de Muro or Sa Coma or Cala d'Or), but the front line restaurants aimed at tourists will be mostly shut.

You could also maybe stay in Pollença / Pollensa town, which is a few km inland and very picturesque.

Rain is always possible at that time of year, but it won't go much below 18 even if you get a couple of days without sun.

The buses are great for getting around if you don't hire a car.

ZiggyZowie · 30/08/2024 20:17

We did, at end October in the north east , Puerto Pollensa.
Had a great time with my five kids. My son had birthday there, went pony trekking, sea is warm.
Weather not too hot. We explored caves, shopping and food cafes. Hired a car halfway through stay for 5 days to explore further.
Cool in evening, we wore a sweater but sat outside playing cards and watching lizards climb up the walls.
Would go in October again., Partly because I find July/ August far too hot.
Had a fab time !

Seville is great, loads to do. What sort of cycling? Easy to cycle around the city and they have boris-style bikes. I went in October a few years ago and it was 30 degrees!! Had a wonderful time, the food is excellent.

Beth216 · 30/08/2024 20:45

We went to Mallorca in Oct and the weather was mixed, it was quiet in PP but there were restaurants open. I wouldn't go at that time again though tbh. If you haven't been then Pathos in Cyprus had far better weather and is worth considering.

monkeyblonde · 31/08/2024 06:41

We went two years ago - weather 30 degrees every day not far from where you are thinking about.
Main issue for us was the mosquitoes though! Never been bitten so much!
Other than that had a lovely time.
