Morocco in August - would you?

I'm looking at destinations for our family holiday next August. We tend to only take one holiday a year and I like it to be in the summer to break up the 6 week holiday. I'd really love to take the DC's to Morocco - getting a villa with pool outside marrakech and then doing a couple of day trips. Do you think it will be just too hot to move? My husband isn't all that keen on heat but it's not like we haven't been to hot countries before. There's air con and shady places. I just don't want to be selfish and drag everyone somewhere I want to go and everyone hates it because they're boiling! All thoughts welcome. Thank you!

If your DH doesn't like the heat, is he going to be prepared to come on any excursions? That seems a different proposition again to a holiday where he could spend the whole time in shade and air con if he wanted.

Morocco in August would be an absolute no from me, but if he's been to hot places before then maybe there's more wiggle room.

No way. Go in early November. Much more pleasant. A friend went in August and it was 45 in the shade.

bragpuss · 25/08/2024 12:49

Yes its a great time to go - enjoy

Twoshoesnewshoes · 25/08/2024 12:52

We’ve been to Marrakech several times over three decades.
absolute No for me. As PP said, late Autumn or early spring- March is ideal.
it’s so hot in August.
the only place I would even consider is somewhere on the coast, as it tends to be very windy which keeps the heat down.

Tipster100 · 25/08/2024 21:46

Ok. Well I guess it's probably a no then! I will have to look at other times of year if we're going to choose to go there. Is Greece any cooler or just as hot? Most of Europe seems quite hot in August nowadays?

For Morocco or any other v hot place like this.if you don't like the heat you have to change your daily routine - get up early, out and about until late morning, inside (nap/read/tablet) until late afternoon then out fairly late into the night. That's how I managed Morocco in August, it was very doable, it's only a challenge if you want to do all-day excursions.

justasmalltownmum · 25/08/2024 21:58

No sooooo hot. Like 42 without AC

longdistanceclaraclara · 25/08/2024 21:58

No way.

ohtowinthelottery · 25/08/2024 21:59

Most of Southern Europe is mid to high 30's at the moment. Not much good if you don't like the heat.

I’ve just returned from a hot country with heat-hating DD and DH, it was only 28-30 and breezy (coastal) and they struggled between about 1 and 5pm to do anything not in shade. Took them on an excursion one day, to see an ancient ruin, we ended up in an amphitheatre at about 1pm, yes it was hot but honestly you’d think they were being fed to the lions themselves. I can’t imagine how they’d cope in 40 degrees. Don’t do it!!!

accentdusoleil · 25/08/2024 22:23

We are in Morocco now . The coast is fine but I wouldn't go to Marrakesh. Spring time is best for Marrakesh . It's like an oven in the summer . Essaouira is nice

It's so hard. I love to feel the sun on my back and the heat around me. It really relaxes me and makes the crap weather in the UK feel bearable for the other 51 weeks of the year. But having my DH and DD moan the whole time about the heat (which they do in the Uk even) is quite draining. The trouble is working out if they'd do it everywhere we went anyway and whether putting them in Morocco in August is a stretch too far!

No I wouldn't. I went climbing/walking in the High Atlas in July and August, which was great but in Marrakech it was just too hot. One of the local temperature displays said it was 51°(I think that seems unlikely and maybe it was broken but I have never been so hot before or since).

51!!! I think part of my problem is that I went to Morocco in November about 20 years ago and it snowed on me which I was not prepared for so in my head it won't be that hot. But it sounds like it will so I should look at perhaps taking holiday a different time of year.

No, we'd wanted to go there for ages and then DH suggested it in August and I said no way. He's fine in 40C, but I could not cope with summer heat.

In fact I'm starting to think I'm going to avoid anywhere hot (including Spain, South of France etc) in July/August now because it seems like painfully hot summers are just becoming the norm. Our holiday in South of France last was spoiled by the first 5 days averaging a very humid 36C, oldest DC in particular struggled with that.

I think it's especially hard when we come from somewhere that seems to have very little sun. Quite a big sudden change when you step out of the plane.

I think for August if you want not super hot you need to look a bit more north in Europe. I always recommend San Sebastián-Biarritz and the environs as the beaches are beautiful, great food and plenty to see.

We are all fine with heat but ILs aren’t so we go there with them and it’s a good compromise.

ElizabethVonArnim · 26/08/2024 08:11

It was comfortably warm at Easter and about 20° in February. If you like it hot, I would think it would be just about perfect in late May.
