Best budget holidays but not resort and not your typical destination?

Me and my 2 DD’s want to go abroad, they have never been abroad and I haven’t been abroad for many years. My DC’s are young adults but both have disabilities (autism and some physical). The idea of a resort is are idea of hell, we don’t do sitting by the pool with lots of people and not interested in all exclusive type holidays as we like to chose where we eat. We are not too bothered about the weather, although I would prefer it if it’s not cold. We like history, culture and exploring but mustn’t be too hilly as DD1 has mobility issues.

Happy to stay in a city or a hut in the middle of nowhere, happy to camp/glamp of hostel.

we don’t have a huge budget but are desperate to explore outside the uk (we have done most of the uk).

Any recommendations?

How about Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia? I went with a friend who had reduced mobility and we had a great time. People are very friendly, the food was nice and plenty of museums/things to see. Definitely good value in comparison to other parts of Europe. I've heard that Lake Bled is lovely too.

The Hague. It's on the coast and it's flat as a pancake.

Zadar in an apartment with pool, cheaper than a hotel. We used uber to get around and it was very cheap. The historical centre was flat and stunning, better than Dubrovnik in my opinion. Roman town of Nin nearby and various ferries to islands

What time of year, how long for and can you be more precise on budget?

Lake garda might be worth a look. The southern end has board walks along the lake and the food is fab. So easy to get the ferry to explore.

Just got back from the Netherlands with my 2 Asd pre teens. Had a fab time Amsterdam and Uterect are nice cities, public transport very easy. Also famously flat! We did a combo of hotels and glamping You don't say where in the UK u are but we are in the North East and took the overnight ferry from Newcastle which is fun and surprisingly more luxurious than it sounds!

Agree regarding Zadar. It is so beautiful and much cheaper than Dubrovnik. There are a few national parks nearby worth exploring also.

Thank you, I will take a look at all the suggestions. We will probably go a couple weeks before schools break up next summer. Dd1 doesn’t like the heat much so would prefer somewhere not too warm. We are ok with using public transport to get around.

We live in the SW so ideally looking to fly from Bournemouth or Bristol (but happy to travel further if needed).

Bristol flight to Venice, water taxi, air BnB. So different and amazing place to see.

Zeeland in the southern Netherlands. Or anywhere up the coast towards Amsterdam

Utrecht is a lovely city to explore. From Zeeland you can easily get to Bruges as well for a day.

I was also going to suggest the Netherlands! We just went to Duinrell but if it had been me/me and DH, we would have done lots of exploring on the trains. Loads of history, everyone seems to speak English, flat, good food…..also beaches if you like those. And not too hot. We did the ferry from Harwich to Hook of Holland - so you could drive or take the train/boat (or Eurostar via Brussels).

I agree about the Netherlands and look at Rotterdam too, a surprisingly lovely city.

Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Delft, Gouda and The Hague are all in easy reach of each other by public transport.

If you are happy going from Heathrow look at BA holidays with flight/accommodation packages, they can be incredibly good value.
