Recommendations - City breaks in February UK or Europe

Anyone have any recommendations of city breaks that would be nice for February time either UK or Europe? DP is turning 40 in January & would like to take him away for 3 nights.

Berlin & Prague are a no as he’s already been there.

Thanks

If you can time your break with Mardi Gras, then either Cadiz or Nice would be amazing, unless he hates crowds. Both cities have several days of carnivals and events that the public can get involved in.

At that time of year do you want the possibility of some warmth/break from the UK winter, or do you want cold/possible snow?

Also flight availability and cost is a consideration if you're not travelling from London as some places are hard to get to without a long journey at one end.

What about Seville or Lisbon? From Seville you could take a day trip to Cordoba on the high speed train. Granada is one of my favourite cities but you'd likely have to go via Malaga, but you could then see both cities. Granada could be quite cold and you can see the snow on the Sierra Nevada from elevated places in the city. Malaga could be pretty much beach weather and also great to wander around and has loads of museums. I'd spend 2 nights in Granada and one in Malaga.

For the UK, I'd go somewhere 2-3 hours away that I hadn't visited before. What about York or Edinburgh?

Reykjavik is nice at that time of year. Short days but I thought that added to the whole atmosphere. Peak time for the Northern Lights as well.

Friends went to Rome in February half-term.

UK can be a hit and miss, grey, wet and cold or a nice spell. I would go for southern Europe.

I agree with this. You could get a city card and visit all the included museums. Also go swimming in the heated outdoor pools if you're brave, many also have spa areas. There's also a light festival the first weekend in February, so that would be nice to see.

Athens?

Valencia, Palma de Mallorca, Seville, Granada, Nice, Marseille for the chance of some winter sunshine. Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Paris if you're not fussed about the weather.

I've not been, but would love to go to Venice in February. It wouldn't be as busy and the river wouldn't smell.

junebirthdaygirl · 22/08/2024 07:10

Rome, Venice or Florence as its always too hot in Summer to enjoy them properly. All fabulous cities. And yes to Malaga too as weather would be better. You have so many options.

Thanks everyone some good places suggested there. Really not fussed about weather we don’t mind wrapping up, DP loves winter anyway.

Only thing is we’ll have to travel half term week in February as I’m in a term time only job which is a tad annoying.

I would recommend Prague or krakow

WhereAreWeNow · 22/08/2024 16:58

Amsterdam has the benefit of direct Eurostar which is a nice way to travel. Shouldn't be too busy in half term and there's loads to do and see.

mummyofhyperDD · 22/08/2024 18:47

We (adults)really enjoyed Rome in feb half term - 16 degrees and sunny, however my 8 year old complained it was boring especially the coliseum

annieloulou · 23/08/2024 22:30

Am going to Seville next February half term week for my birthday.

Went to Paris same time for my 40th (several years ago now!) . Was worried about the weather but it was nice and sunny.

I would book flights asap as they will go up as you get nearer.

LadyLapsang · 24/08/2024 18:11

Rome, Madrid, Budapest. I’ve been to all three in January.

SwedishEdith · 24/08/2024 18:17

February half term, I've visited Venice (magical as clear and cold), Rome, Barcelona, Genoa (underrated) and Florence (good time to go).

Valetta in Malta is quite nice in winter. Weather can be quite decent for a wander around the cultural sites in the city and take trips further afield on Malta and Gozo. You could even take a day trip to Sicily to see Mount Etna.

You can also amuse yourself watching the Maltese in their big coats in weather that we'd be happy with in summer in the UK.
