Cruise for elderly mum

cashmerecardigans · 21/08/2024 14:42

Hi
I'm exploring the possibility of going with my mum on a cruise.
I've never been on one myself, so have no reference point, but in addition to that my mum is 91 and has minor mobility issues, meaning she uses a walking aid. Are there any particular companies that are better for elderly folk? She will not want huge noisy entertainment and I think would prefer more time at sea than on land as too many excursions will wear her out.
She's mentally very with it, would probably love to see the fjords or something more historical than overly touristy.
Any pointers so I can start looking would be much appreciated .

Saga are the company that cater best of all for older guests - you have to be over 50, though a partner/companion travelling with an over 50 can be 40+. There was at least one guest over 100 on our Saga cruise.

They are expensive - but you get an awful lot for your money, including a chauffeured car that picks you up from your house (provided you are on the UK mainland) and then takes you home at the end of it. Almost all of their cruises begin and end in Dover or Portsmouth.

The accommodation is very good and comfortable. All food is included (as with any cruise) but also included is the option to dine at least once in each of the 3 'speciality' restaurants on board. Drinks are included in your fare (and it's a very good range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks) and depending on the legth of cruise, several shore excursions are included in the price.

We have done 30 cruises (we're in our 60s and very fit and mobile) but our most recent cruise was with Saga (end of May-June) because another we'd booked got cancelled at the last minute and Saga were doing one in the timescale of the cancelled cruise. We were a bit apprehensive but would definitely do one with Saga again (we already had another 4 booked with other cruise lines, however, taking us up to January 2026!). Do ask me anything if you like - move to DM if you prefer.

Fred Olsen, Ambassador and Saga are worth looking at.Saga is the most expensive and i have heard very mixed reports about them.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/08/2024 16:20

We've done precisely one cruise - fjords with Fred Olsen.

There were a mix of ages but tending to the older end, pretty sure there were quite a few people with restricted mobility.

The fjords are probably the ideal cruise for her as the sightseeing from the ship is brilliant! FO has somewhat smaller ships than some of the other lines so can go under bridges into some parts they can't.

We didn't do any excursions (we'd have liked to do one, a famous scenic train ride I've forgotten the name of but we didn't book it in time).

What kinds of negative things did you hear?

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 21/08/2024 16:33

One of my patients had dreadful food and servce for the length of her cruise. Another had terrible cabin facilities including a bed which had lumps in it and dirty carpets etc. all complaining about poor value for money and both paid over £5000 each for a weeks cruise.

Chewbecca · 21/08/2024 16:33

Fred Olsen, sailing from the UK (they go from various places).

ShanghaiDiva · 21/08/2024 16:37

Saga. My aunt and uncle went on numerous cruises with them, most recent one to celebrate aunt’s 90th birthday. Being collected from home was a definite plus.

Blimey! We paid c. £3500 each for a 12 night cruise and didn't have that experience at all.

We've cruised with: Celebrity, Azamara (our favourite), Princess, Cunard, Viking and Saga. Older guests are welcome on all of them but I recommended Saga because they specialise in older guests, provide the chauffeured car to and from the port as part of the fare, etc.

helpfulperson · 21/08/2024 16:44

I agree a Fred olsen fjords cruise would probably suit her. is one YouTube video but there are loads of others.

Yes, the ladies have cruised a lot with celebrity, cunard, riviera, and princess,so they definitely have experience. One of them resorted to eating some biscuits they took with them because the food was so rubbish.

ItWasntMyFault · 21/08/2024 17:41

I've done Fred Olsen with my elderly parents. Couldn't fault the staff, excellent food, very comfortable beds.
Activities were things like art classes, bridge lessons, quizzes etc.
Evening shows were really good.
Average age on board I would estimate to be 70 - 90 ish with a few younger ones of 50-60s.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/08/2024 17:44

The FO one we did was from Rosyth, which was great as that meant shorter crossing to Norway. I think (not sure) others may go from Liverpool or Southampton- probably whichever is the shortest land journey for your mum would be best.

Crazykefir · 21/08/2024 17:55

I did P&O a while back, medditerian from Southampton. There were lifts everywhere, loads of people with mobility needs. You were picked up by coach for all excursions. Food was great but we spent a fortune on board the boat on extras. Really chatty friendly holidaymakers.

cashmerecardigans · 21/08/2024 19:01

Thanks so much everyone, it looks like Saga or Fred Olsen are ones to explore. Thanks also for the advice on destination, I think the fjords will be perfect for her, particularly as it sounds as if she have great views from the ship.

And thank you @VickyEadieofThigh for that detailed response. I'll do a bit more research and DM you with any specific queries

My elderly father has had good experiences with HollandAmerica. He really didn’t like P&O - felt was much more downmarket.

Do you know roughly when this experience was?

EvelynBeatrice · 21/08/2024 19:19

You could have a look at the reviews on cruise critic. Also useful for choosing a good stateroom when you have chosen your ship.

Flåm

Beautiful train journey up and down a mountain. Easy walk from cruise ship to station and then sitting down.

We've just done the train journey (but not the cruise) and my husband uses a wheelchair.

Songlines · 21/08/2024 20:43

I'd also check out Hurtigruten. Small boats, excellent service, beautiful views. We did the Norway Northern Lights trip in 2022 leaving from Dover but I don't think they do that departure any more. The North Sea in October/November can be a bit bouncy!

Yes, in July, they have just returned.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 22/08/2024 08:42

Vicky, in fact, they put in a complaint straight away and haven’t yet heard anything!

whatsappdoc · 22/08/2024 09:32

Might be worth investigating a disabled cabin where the entrances will be wider and the bathroom more accessible just in case she struggles to manoeuvre her walker. Go for a balcony room as well, if she's tired she can sit out there with a drink or meal. Makes the difference I always think.

Budgiegirlbob · 22/08/2024 11:59

My mum did 4 cruises with Saga in her late 80s, , to Norway or around the British Isles. She loved every one. They were expensive - I think she paid around £4000 for a week - but it was worth it for the ease of the holiday. She was on her own, so the transport service from home to port was invaluable. It also includes insurance in the price.

Mum had a great time - she had either a single or double balcony cabin, and didn’t get off the ship on her later cruises, she just enjoyed the view from the balcony. She said the food was good, and the staff were excellent. They would even walk her back to her cabin at the end of the day if the ship was a bit rocky.

Unfortunately she did have a fall at one point, but the medical team were excellent, and there was no bill to pay as it was all covered under Sagas insurance.

cashmerecardigans · 24/08/2024 21:08

Thanks so much everyone, I talked to mum about it today and she is really keen to go, so I'll follow up all your posts to work out what is best. She really wants you to downs more time on the water than not, so I'll definitely look for those options either way easy short excursions or where she can just stay on board and admire the views
