Can anyone please recommend travel for a solo quite active middle aged woman in school holidays please?

I don't really know where to start with it. I teach so I'm stuck with the school holidays and my friends understandably want to travel outside school holiday time so it would be just me.

I don't really want to join a whole group of 20/30 somethings. The travel group I've been with once doesn't usually do school holiday trips at all but there was a fluke trip I took advantage of.

Any recommendations please?

I used to go with Exodus or Explore. Had good experiences with both of them, although they aren't cheap.

Thanks @BlackCatsAreBrilliant I'll have a look.

'Love her wild' group run trips (not sure on dates) and your local LGW group or the national one (find them on Facebook) are great places to ask for trip recommendations as you'll find lots of active outdoorsy women there who'll happily share tips and recommendations

I live on my own and travel on my own. I decide where I fancy going, book flights, book accommodation, car hire if needed, and go.

LakelandDreams · 21/08/2024 12:07

Wild Frontiers are great. Active and unusual destinations. Mixed aged groups. Again, not cheap though.

I’ve travelled extensively on my own to many places, and done a mixture of solo stuff and small group trips. I’ve done several with Intrepid Travel and they’re great. Lots of options in terms of trip style but in my experience they attract a wide age range, get you off the beaten track, provide local experiences you’d be unlikely to get alone, and the groups are small (10-12 people). Really recommend them.

I’ve also done some hiking/biking/kayaking trips with other companies - the key in my opinion is looking for small group options, and if it’s a slightly higher price range (with solo or twin accommodation) you’ll tend to get a slightly older age range.

I had several holidays with Explore. You go on your own but meet up with a group.

I went with Exodus to Turkey as a single woman in my mid-30s. There were people of different ages... a lovely lady in her 60s, a young couple in their 20s, some in between. We walked through the mountains with a guide and stayed in remote spots. It was great!

GloriaSmornin · 21/08/2024 12:16

Thanks for all these recommendations. I'll have a trawl through and see what they've got for school holiday time. 😊

Spending of it's your thing or not, Swimtrek are great. Lots
Of solo travellers in the groups.

lljkk · 21/08/2024 12:58

I'm confused, you say solo traveller but you actually want to join a group and not be solo?

MrsHamlet · 21/08/2024 13:04

Intrepid.
Or pick a country and choose a company there. I recommend:
Kalpak travel for Central Asia
Selena travel for Mongolia
Arara for the Caucuses

All small groups. All excellent.

wantmorenow · 21/08/2024 13:08

Friendship Travel
Fantastic company offering solo travellers a range of holidays. Mostly over 50s.

notacooldad · 21/08/2024 13:08

Do you need a group?
I just look on skyscanner at the dates I want to go somewhere and for the destination I leave blank. I usually put the whole month down then you can see the difference in price for departing or arriving back on different days.

I then use booking.com or trip advisor to look for accommodation.
Solo travel is brilliant!

As in I no longer have family or friends who I can travel with.

I went on safari with Intrepid - very mixed group, around half were in couples/pairs of friends and the rest individuals. Age range late 20s to mid 60s (most aged 30-40s). Everyone got on well, was a fantastic couple of weeks.

Why is that confusing? When I was single I went on holiday on my own (ie solo) and met other people there I could join in with for meals etc or not.

alexasaysnoway · 21/08/2024 16:53

Intrepid, Dragoman, Explore etc all good.

BeaRF75 · 21/08/2024 16:58

Doesn't it depend on where you want to go? If in Europe, you can just book your own travel and accommodation directly and go totally solo.
For some more "adventurous" countries, you might want to be guided (either privately or in a group), in which case find a company that specialises in the relevant country/area.
Or are you looking for a trip where you'll definitely be travelling with other people?
Once you've narrowed it down, then you can find the right providers.

HoHoHoliday · 21/08/2024 17:01

Would you be happy to travel by yourself or are you seeking to join a group?
I've traveled by myself all over the place! It's easy to do and very rewarding.
I'd suggest the Scandinavian countries are very easy as a starting place for solo travel. Easy to get around, very enjoyable, you won't stick out anywhere.

Why is that confusing? When I was single I went on holiday on my own (ie solo) and met other people there I could join in with for meals etc or not.

Coz I go out do things myself in a group of 1. Kayaking, walking, cycling, etc. I cycled around Poland, Ireland & Iceland for weeks by myself. I didn't join formal groups but sometimes found people to eat or cycle or walk up with on the day, in campsites. I solo travelled in Africa (albeit with guides & drivers to help me get to many places).

That's what solo travel to me means.

I would have said something like "please recommend active group holidays to me" if I were OP. She's not planning to travel solo.

Interesting that people use the word in other ways.

ps: I joined an Exodus group of ... ? 7 people total? to walk up Mt Kenya, with guides & porters. We the tourists were all "solo" travellers. That was a great trip.

My friend went with this company earlier this year and raved about the holiday
