Food in hand luggage

This is allowed isn't it. Please reassure me. Going on holiday flying for first time in years and DH is unconvinced. Just thinking of taking some sweets and crisps for snacks. A large Pringles instead of the poxy snack size they sell on the plane.

Fine.

Usernamerequired123 · 20/08/2024 20:25

Absolutely fine. Take more !

Usernamerequired123 · 20/08/2024 20:26

Nothing liquid though.

Saschka · 20/08/2024 20:26

Totally fine. We often get on the plane with a picnic (kills time on a boring flight, saves money, and we’re usually travelling over a meal time anyway).

dementedpixie · 20/08/2024 20:26

Yes its fine. We always take big tubs of pringles, crisps, sweets, etc. You can take sandwiches and fruit too. Just check whether you can take any leftover fruit into the destination country as you may need to ditch them for some of them.

Dox9 · 20/08/2024 20:30

It's fine. We take filled rolls, snacks and fruit. We're in EU and don't need to think about this but flying from UK maybe check what you can bring into EU. Any prohibited bits need to be eaten before arriving.

Poachedeggavocado · 20/08/2024 21:02

Absolutely. Air travel isn't what it used to be with lovely little hot tray meals. We take ham oe cheese rolls, crisps and buy drinks airside. It's a free for all now.

Us too, and if we're near the galley there is enough room to spread out our red and white picnic mat and sit on the floor. The cabin staff generally just step over us.
And there are no wasps!

DanceMumTaxi · 20/08/2024 21:15

We take a full on picnic 😁

PurBal · 20/08/2024 21:54

I took a leg of lamb from the UK to Singapore about 10 years ago. No one said anything.

soupfiend · 20/08/2024 21:55

Yes I went through security with slices of pizza in foil, I thought they would make me throw it away.

On the way home, often carry home a whole Manchego

Yeah that wouldn't happen now.

You can always buy airside op.

Maddy70 · 20/08/2024 22:05

Get a boots meal deal before you fly

PurBal · 20/08/2024 22:12

@longdistanceclaraclara really, why? Just checked Singapores Food Agency and you can take 5kg of mutton from the UK. Also check hand luggage restrictions on UK airports and no restrictions on food.

NotARealWookiie · 20/08/2024 22:16

Yeah you can take food! I got on a plane with a Nando’s last time

grimupnorthnot · 21/08/2024 10:11

We take empty water bottles and fill up airside as well

samarrange · 22/08/2024 22:51

Don't worry if you don't finish it before landing. If you're going to the EU, you will not be stopped (one chance in a million... EU airport customs people are not interested in families going on holiday), and and and in any case it's fine to take any sort of packaged food with you, and and and and and if they did stop you and take exception to your half-eaten tub of Pringles, the penalty would be that you would lose the Pringles, not deportation via Guantanamo.

SiobhanSharpe · 09/01/2025 11:46

If it's Australia or North America, meat, fruit and vegetables might be a problem at entry. Eat them up or bin them.
I remember my aunt trying to take a bag of tomatoes (requested by her sister who lived there) into Canada quite a few years ago, much to the bemusement of the customs officials. They demanded to know what was wrong with Canadian tomatoes. Well, they're not like English tomatoes, she said. They were confiscated.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 09/01/2025 12:10

Fine

Natsku · 09/01/2025 12:13

It's fine, just nothing liquid or liquidy (so no yoghurt or anything like that). I always take sandwiches, crisps, biscuits, sweets, fruit

We take our portable barbecue on board and grill some sausages. The other passengers always look so jealous!

Don’t forget, camping gas and lighter fluid aren’t allowed on board due to fluid restrictions, so you have to use charcoal briquettes with those little polystyrene fire lighters.

Some people always complain about the smoke, but they are clearly just jealous and the stewardesses generally tell them to get back to Economy.

olivekekitchentiles · 11/01/2025 02:49

Completely fine. I feel like it's rude to bring on hot food that has strong smells, but I've been on plenty of flights where someone near me has opened up a Maccies so I think I'm in the minority with that opinion.

Just be aware that some countries will make you discard any leftover food on arrival.

Reugny · 11/01/2025 02:51

As long as it's packaged processed food they don't care.

Just declare it if asked if you have it in landing.

Customs in US, NZ and Australia may laugh at you if you do this but due to the people who try to smuggle in meat etc they prefer it.
