Is it sad to take bottles of wine on holiday?

We are going on holiday to a small but expensive island. Supermarkets obviously sell wine but it’s £10 for a crap wine. Beach bars sell bottles to drink on the beach but they’re £40-50.

I buy nice wine on special offer in the UK for ~£8 a bottle, and always take a cooler to the beach for water too. I’m not pay £6 for a bottle of water.

I have spare weight in my luggage, is it sad to take bottles of wine with me?

No. Decant them into plastic bottles to get more in!

Caffeineneedednow · 19/08/2024 19:23

No not at all. Alot of people hit up duty free in airports so not much different. We just got a ferry back to Ireland to see my family and threw Prosecco and beer in the back as its so much more expensive here

Not sad at all, it makes good sense. Look up wine refill/bladder bags on Amazon. They're brilliant.

Plantpotpot · 19/08/2024 19:32

Take a box! Easier to pack

Saxendi · 19/08/2024 19:32

Wine boxes

SunQueen24 · 19/08/2024 19:33

No. Sounds sensible.

Flibflobflibflob · 19/08/2024 19:33

No, practical, theres nothing clever about paying through the nose for bad wine.

Lizzy7596 · 19/08/2024 19:35

Yes take it .
Spend the money you saved on something nice for yourself .

TheHauntedPencilCase · 19/08/2024 19:35

We always take wine, albeit usually duty free, with us to turkey as we travel there regularly and alcohol is super expensive so I think it's sensible! I will also look at wine bags next time we go with thanks to this post

Turophilic · 19/08/2024 19:35

We took it to Norway, where a glass of wine was £12 in a restaurant. We took the bag from inside a box, triple bagged in the luggage against any possible leak.,

NuffSaidSam · 19/08/2024 19:37

If you're flying it seems a bit odd, fine in a car, but each to their own! It's none of my business what you bring on holiday.

Theimpossiblegirl · 19/08/2024 19:44

I agree with a box, less can go wrong.

soupfiend · 19/08/2024 19:47

I wouldnt carry in my luggage, it seems like a lot of hard work for not much saving

In the UK yes, we're taking lots of stuff with us this week when we go away

SkankingWombat · 19/08/2024 20:10

I wouldn't pack it in my luggage as I'd be too worried about breakages/leaks on my clothes. However, I would (and did when I went to Iceland, where alcohol is really pricey) buy wine in the duty free.

Take a box! Easier to pack

This !! And less likely to break !

vincettenoir · 19/08/2024 20:13

Makes complete sense to me.

JaninaDuszejko · 19/08/2024 20:16

I've taken a box of wine (12 bottles) when we go on holiday in the UK but have never done it abroad.

DancingNotDrowning · 19/08/2024 20:20

Depends where I guess - not everywhere allows you to import alcohol.

I’ve never taken wine but have been know to grab a bottle of gin at duty free

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 19/08/2024 20:28

Am currently on holiday in Europe, brought 4 bottles with us (came in the car so was easy)

MounjaroUser · 02/11/2024 20:14

That's funny, I was just reading a thread where the OP wanted to drink her own wine at the airport instead of spending £10 per glass, and I thought she was going to get lynched.

Havalona · 02/11/2024 20:26

It would be easier to go to a country where the wine is good and inexpensive surely?

reluctantbrit · 02/11/2024 20:31

I wouldn't do it but we are normally people who won't have the additional weight available in their luggage.

If I can afford this holiday then I budget food and drink as well or I stay away from alcohol.

Shatteredandconfused · 02/11/2024 20:32

Wine boxes - laithwaites do some delicious wines in boxes. Totally get it - wine on holiday is a real joy and if it’s going to be crap or ridiculously priced take your own!

Can you say where you're going? The kinds of places that charge that much for wine tend to not like you taking alcohol in. The Maldives doesn't allow visitors to bring in any alcohol (and in many of the resorts, the bar staff are Sri Lankans so the Muslim staff don't have to get involved in supplying alcohol), and penalties for sneaking in your own bottle are high.

TeamGeriatric · 03/11/2024 06:58

I'm assuming it's not the Maldives as OP mentioned buying in supermarkets and that isn't an option there. Maldives go as far as x-raying all luggage on arrival.
