L'Escala

I am already dreaming of getting away next year. Can anyone tell me about L'Escala? We are looking for villa with pool and near the beach (of course) and there seem to be lots of options, but I don't know the areas or how far away from the village they are. We won't be driving so will be a bit limited, which is okay for a week as teens just want beach and swimming and chilling. Not keen on party/very touristy. Would L'Escala suit? Which airport is easy via taxi? Sorry for all the questions!

Google maps is your friend here.

Once you know the location of the villa, you just get directions to a point of interest in the village and it tells you how far it is, if it's hilly etc.

Same for getting from the airport, it's a bit of a trek from the nearest airport, Girona, so I'd expect a taxi to be expensive, so if you don't want to pay £££s, I'd look at other options like public transport or shared transfers. Often the property owners can advise on the different transfer options.

I went to the area about 30 years ago and don't remember a huge amount about it. We drove there from northern England, which was the done thing at the time because this was before low cost airlines so this was a bit of an adventure. I'd love to go back but just haven't got round to it.

L'Escala looks like a good place for you. We stayed in a Eurocamp type place a bit further south. I remember we went to Empuries (Roman ruins) further up the coast, Roses a nice town and a water park. But we drove everywhere. You might be able to get to these places on public transport or excursions, so worth looking into while you're there - I've found it's sometimes difficult to find out about Spanish public transport options online unless you get the app for the local bus/train company so just easier to pick up leaflets at the bus station or tourist info place when you're there.

You can probably go on a boat trip to Islas Medes, which is a marine reserve so could be good for snorkelling.

Girona city itself is worth it for a day out. But as it's quite a way away, I'd probably combine it with the trip to or from the airport, even if it means booking another night's accommodation.

Just looked and the Roman ruins (Empuries) is only a couple of miles outside L'Escala, so you could get a taxi there in the absence of public transport/excursions. Or even walk depending on where you're actually staying.

L'Escala is great! If you want an authentic holiday town with minimal numbers of Brits, it's perfect. Very popular with French tourists. The old town is my favourite but it's less common to find a villa with pool there, perhaps on the outskirts though but it is mainly apartments in town. Although old town is prettiest and most authentic, consider also the Riells beach end of town - don't be put off by the modern buildings and more likely to find what you want accommodation wise. You can do as far as Cala Montgo and there is a tourist bus (think classic train/bus) which runs between Montgo and St Martí (where the ruins are) My preference is to stay in old town and go to the St Martí beaches.
The ruins are really interesting, stunning views but completely exposed to the sun so best visited on a cloudy day. There are boat trips available and Cadaques is worth a visit (Dali museum) as well as Roses.

Girona is around 40 mins in a taxi. It was reasonably priced when I last went about 5 years ago. I believe there are public buses from both Girona and BCN but have never taken them, not sure it's cost effective for a while family and certainly worth paying a bit extra for ease when I did it with young children.

I'm now very jealous and off to plan my own trip back there I think!

Thanks both - that was so helpful!

@Bjorkdidit I do usually do the google maps thing (to the extent I freak my husband out by telling him what is round the corner in a city we have never been to before!), but didn't really even know where to start with L'Escala.

All my hoildays as a kid began with a 20+ hr car journey and staying or camping somewhere slightly unspeakable on the way down. A night in Girona sounds a lot more glamorous if we can stretch to it.

Great tips @PopPopMusic, thank you!
