Moved house and area a few months ago and really want to get away for a city break, but can't cope with much organisation as feeling fairly overloaded at home. Am excited to have booked 4 nights in Dublin near end of September. I've never been before. What would you advise doing/going? Going on my own, so also keen on your places you'd feel happy alone.

I like museums, theatre, history, bookshops, markets; good food; gardens; walking/scenery; nice bars; wild swimming. Staying in the centre in Portobello area.

Thanks for your suggestions!

If you fancy going further my husbands family is from Skerries in north Dublin. Gorgeous beach and town. Storm in a teacup is an amazing ice cream place.

I grew up there - we're very proud to call it a town!

I'd never diss Dalkey. Town it is ❤️

This is going to be great! Thank you all so much. I now have my tips for celebrity spotting, wild swimming, public transport, culture, theatre, good meals, pub crawls and stylish bars, chips, world-beating icecreams, and fishing villages with stylish restaurants. Don't diss the mumsnet community.

If you enjoy walking, get the dart out to Howth and do a coastal walk around the headland from there. It's a welcome change from the city!

NB The Winding Stair is a posh restaurant now and the bookshop is gone

Bookshop still downstairs.

You could also try GPO museum (haven't been yet) and Epic Museum (overseas friends who visited loved it) - Jeanie Johnston Famine Ship visit sometimes included in ticket price.

The Winding Stair - Dublin Restaurant & Bookshop

Dublin city centre restaurant with views of the Ha'Penny Bridge and The Liffey river.

We really enjoyed the Little Museum of Dublin, and surprisingly the Zoo. Phoenix Park is nice for a wander around.

I'm from Dublin and hate to say it but the city center has turned very rough I don't even go into unless I have to , No 1 must is the Guinness store house but after that I would look at going outside of the city centre or even outside Dublin on a day trip .

There is a lovely book shop Called Ulysses Rare Books if you wanted to buy something special

Rock 'n' Roll Museum

City centre a bit rough around Abbey Street and Henry Street but Grafton Street etc fine.

Just to report back and thank you all. Your tips really made a (very wet) few days a much happier time.

Loved Trinity College, Book of Kells and Book of Kells Experience. Dart to Dalkey, a swim at Vico, wander round through Sorrento Park to Colliemore harbour. Highly recommend the Emigration Museum; also the Archaeology Museum (Vikings); Kilmainahan Gaol; GPO Museum. Some smashing shopping, thanks to those who suggested Powerscourt TownHouse, the bookshops, Avoca and the markets; pubs :); and some great food too.

I'd recommend Honey Truffle on Pearse Street, if you like tasty soups and salads, student-style; The Port House on Aungier Street (tapas).

@redmapleleaves1 so glad you had a fab time!!! I have a soft spot for coliemore road, I used to live there. I have a 3ft picture of the harbour on my bedroom wall.

But the question is... Did you get a Teddy's?!

Thanks for commenting @redmapleleaves1
Dunli often gets a bad rap here with posters saying there’s nothing to do!

The Guinness factory. We went when we were in Dublin for the rugby and were given more than the half pint you are given. By far the best Guinness.
