Anyone been to Dominican Republic? Where to stay?

We've booked flights to Punta Cana early next year, staying for 10 nights to escape the British winter but I'm befuddled by where to actually spend the holiday. We had an expiring BA companion voucher to use and there weren't many reward flights available.

It's just DH and I (empty nesters). We're happy to go to a resort or resorts but would like some activities like tennis, yoga, dance lessons. Not too rowdy and we could spend up to about £500 a night for somewhere lovely.

Online reviews seem very mixed for everywhere within our budget, so much so that I'm wondering if I should change the flights and go somewhere completely different.

I phoned BA and they told me where we'd probably find reward flights in business class - not much available.
I CBA to spend longer on their website, it's not very user-friendly, plus we need to go when my husband's business is quiet.
We do have a better plan now, thanks to everyone's help here and after watching a couple of travel programmes on iPlayer. - I have changed my mind about going further afield to see more of the island and it's history and culture.

Ive heard good things about the Club Med

We fly business and we’ve had fantastic luck with BA. But not Caribbean in high season! Not that we want to go there again! Trying out more of the world! We’ve got Denver next year. Have had South Africa, Argentina, USA including SF and LA, Japan, etc but we are flexible on dates which helps a lot.

I love Club Med, but the reviews for their 2 resorts in DR are absolutely shocking! Going beyond the usual moaning on TA.

Have you been to either of them please?
