travel insurance HELP terminal

hello :) I am trying to take some weight off my parents shoulders. my dad has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He is still being treat and doing very well. He is responding to palliative chemo. They lost last years hols but are going to MaJorca during his treatment break next month. The insurance quote they have is more than the holiday itself. This is not a surprise but as they have very little spare money I am trying to just help how I can. I have offered to help pay for it but they won't let me :(

Please can anyone recommend anything? Ideally covering pre-existing but also to consider exclusions. im not after a discussion about if they should go. Thats something that has happened in depth. Just the advice and recommendations around actual insurance cover.

Thankyou !

Who did you get a quote from? As I understand it there are companies that offer insurance specifically for people with terminal diagnoses. They may be cheaper?
Another option is to ask their cancer nurse at the hospital they may know of some more companies.

MacMillan usually have a list of companies. However,we found it impossible to insure DH once he was terminal, so we went without & decided to risk it. Crazy I know but it was the only chance of a holiday.
You can insure for baggage, delays etc but health/repatriation is difficult.

My mum has spoken to the cancer hospital and also trawled through macmillan. So far he’s been pretty much turned away. It’s not crazy going without. Lots of people do it and they will too as a last resort. They are in the EU so have the health cards. So he will receive the free health care in an emergency. Its about quality of life And having a life.

i have just suggested we make a plan for if anything were to go wrong. Advanced care plan sort of thing with his wishes. I just thought I would ask around first.

thanks so much for your advice

I've found this company good value for our many pre-existing medical conditions but I don't know how they would charge for your Dad. Worth a try I think www.oktotravelinsurance.co.uk

Hey, I'm sorry to hear about your Dad. I know you mentioned Macmillan, but if you haven't already I'd suggest ringing their helpline and asking to speak to a financial guide, as they are trained specifically to support around matters like this. Hope your parents have a lovely time on their holiday

Hey,

Have you tried staysure insurance? That's who we use for my husband who was diagnosed with brain cancer.

I hope they have the best time on holiday!! X

AttilaTheMeerkat · 18/08/2024 20:41

I would try stsysure too. They need health insurance also, they must not simply rely on EHIC. An EHIC would not cover the cost of specialist medical assistance in returning to the U.K if this was needed.

Andwegoroundagain · 18/08/2024 20:50

So what do you/parents want the insurance for ? I'm asking kindly ... my friend who had cancer had that excluded for her trips as fundamentally if anything happened related to that she'd just fly home for treatment. So she really only needed insurance for unrelated stuff eg slips and trips.
If they are going on a short break then you can either self insure (along with EHIC) or find an insurance that will allow you to exclude the cancer.
If you or they are so worried about the cancer and want that insured then maybe a short break in UK is better option

We have used the wonderfully named battleface.com for travel to risky places. They may be worth asking re health issues too.

catherinewales · 18/08/2024 21:37

We are having the same issues. My husband is 45 and we had a holiday cancelled earlier this year and would love to go away but he's going to be on immunotherapy for the rest of his life and it seems while under treatment no one wants to insure you. Sending you massive hugs and I hope they manage even a few days away xx

It's worth contacting staysure.
They will cover pre-existing conditions under treatment but I'm not sure they'll provide cover with a terminal diagnosis.
