Money for Greek Island Holiday

As the title suggests, we are off to a Greek Island in a couple of weeks. 7 nights, self catering apartment.

So how would you take your money?

I'm not asking how much etc (as obviously that is how long is a piece of string!) but in what form do you take your spending money.

Last year we took the lot in Euros cash ~ but my colleague says she always takes a Resolut Card (but she tends to go to the States/Portugal/Mainland Spain). Another friend says she takes about £100 Stirling, £100 in local currency and the rest on her credit card... (she goes to Egypt generally).
I may sound ridiculous but I worry that cards particularly one like Resolut, wouldn't be accepted everywhere? But obviously all that cash is a bit of a security risk too...

How do all you savvy travellers take your money?

Thank you in advance!

Are you in mainland Greece or a smaller island?

Small Greek island, not many UK tourists and all the cafes/bars/restaurants we’ve been to have asked if we want to pay cash or card.

We’ve just got back from travelling a few Greek islands and averaged at €240 per day. Couple in late 30s staying on a B&B basis.

Misread as ‘how much’ not ‘how’. So, we used a Chase account and paid for everything via Apple Pay.

I think its how I word it 😂 everyone IRL thinks that what I mean when I ask the question....

We always take mostly Euros. There was a problem on the island we visited earlier this year and all of the POS machines went down for 3 days. Was a relief to have the cash

Same in Crete. The card machines seemed to be 'broken' in a few placesHmm
We took about £100 in cash which we used mainly for taxis, tips, small purchases but did end up changing a bit more,

We are going to Kefalonia so much smaller than Crete or Corfu... so this was my worry (ie presenting my Resolut card or credit card and not getting anywhere 🤷)
If I was in Mainland Spain/Portugal/Greece I'd probably be more confident in plastic/phone app...

Kefalonia is is 787km2. I’ve just come
back from a Greek island that is 3.5km2 -
everywhere took card payment. You’re not going to a small Greek island at all!

OK... apologies for mis-using the word "small" 🙄
The point I was making was that PP's have experienced problems with cards in the larger, more commercial islands of Crete and Corfu.

Kefalonia is a lovely but well adapted for tourism as are most of the Greek islands with airports or indeed well established ferry routes. I understand what you were thinking re Crete but honestly you’ll be fine with cards plus a little back up cash if that’s your preference.

It wasn’t a dig - I was just trying to allay your concerns!

Whereabouts in Kefalonia? We've been a couple of times now to Katelios, on the South of the island, which is a small town (not really much more than a village), and everywhere took cards. If you're going up to the North of the island, to somewhere like Fiskardo, it's much more touristy there, so definitely won't be a problem.

Thank you x I'm clearly overthinking this 😉

Thank you x Svoronata (so not far from the airport etc).

Thank you 😊 I think we will do 50/50. I'm sure you are right - this time of year the majority of places will be very well set up for all tourists requirements!

I went to Rhodes in June and didn't spend a penny in cash. It was cards everywhere

jackstini · 18/08/2024 14:30

We were in Rhodes last week

Almost everywhere took cards. We have Halifax Clarity so no extra charges

Took approx €200 cash for smaller purchases
