First time visit to Lille - recommendations?

Hey everyone,

I'm heading to Lille for the first time in early September and will be staying for 3 days near the city centre. I'm really excited to explore and would love any recommendations you might have! Are there any must-visit spots, hidden gems, or tips that could help me make the most of my trip?

Thanks so much in advance!

It's a lovely town. There are plenty of landmarks in the centre.

For food I recommend going down the Rue de Gand, which has various "Estaminets" which are the traditional restaurants serving very heavy food!

It really depends on what kind of thing you are looking for. I just like wandering where the wind takes me.

There’s a huge outdoor market which is worth a look. It’s also next to an indoor market selling lovely food. Check which days it’s on. We just enjoyed wandering around. There are some stunning churches & a cathedral if that’s your thing.

On a rainy day we went to the Palais Des Beaux Arts. It was really good & not too expensive. Would also recommend Le Broc, an amazing cheese restaurant. There are 2 branches in Lille.

It's lovely for just wandering around. There's a big park around a citadel on the northern side of the city - that was nice to stroll in (was warm and sunny when we were there). There was a bar on a boat just outside there, on the way back towards town. You had to be a member to buy a drink, but you could pay anything for your membership (we paid €1 each) - it was a great spot for a drink.

The cathedral is definitely worth a visit, and all the old town streets behind that. Lots of lovely restaurants there.

There's a bell tower to the south - it was 'unexpectedly closed' when we were there, but apparently the views from the top are great.

The art museum was good - not too expensive to go in.

There's a museum/gallery in an old swimming pool which looked good - it was out of the centre (presumably a tram/train ride away) - we'd have gone there if we'd had more time.

These sound like must-tries for some authentic local food. I'm definitely planning to wander and explore, so I'll keep your suggestions in mind as I go. Thanks so much for the tips!

The markets sounds like a great place to explore, and I'll deffo check out the Palais Des Beaux Arts, especially if the weather turns. Le Broc also sounds amazing - I love cheese, so that's going on my list! Thanks so much for these recommendations!

The park around the citadel and the boat bar sound like unique experiences, and I'll definitely look into the cathedral and old town streets for some lovely strolling and dining. The bell tower and the museum/gallery in the old swimming pool also sounds interesting. The latter is called La Piscine right? I'll add them to my list of things to check out. Thanks for the tips!

Just keep an eye out for all the beggers. I must have been asked about 5 times a day for money.

Actually, I'm going to be taking DS14 there next year, so I'd be interested in things that might amuse a grumpy teenager.

We ate at the one at Lille Europe - but the Vieux Lille one looks beautiful. I had the brochette and it was deliecious.

Quirkyme · 24/08/2024 15:01

@Tsuipen The brochette sounds fantastic. I'll make sure to check it out when I'm there. I appreciate the recommendation!

We were just there for the Olympics, didn't do a huge amount because we spent a lot of time watching basketball. On our free day we went up the Belfry, you can pre-book tickets online for a 10am ascent, or you can queue and it's first come first from 11am every day. Capacity is limited to I think 18, as it's fairly small at the top, so it's one in one out once capacity is reached. We queued about 20 minutes. Just to the side of that there is the Paris gate. Afterwards we visited the art gallery, which had a Monet exhibition on, the whole place was fine but not unmissable, the outside of the building is very pretty. I had planned to head up to the citadel, like a star shaped fortress which is closed to the public, but you can walk around the outside, but we ran out of time as we got distracted by the US basketball team and all the extra free events going on in the city for the Olympics. The old stock exchange, really lovely building with book stalls in the centre is worth a peek, but won't divert your attention for long. The first home of Charles de Gaulle (as a baby) is in Lille and there are also the Somme battlefields within day tripping distance if you have enough time.

TeamGeriatric · 24/08/2024 17:58

Just spotted.the recommendation for Le Barbier qui fume, we also ate here though at Place Rihour branch. It was good, we had moules frites, my husband had Welsh rarebit. I think the mussels were better. They have lots of other meat stuff though if you are a carnivore.

Thank you so much for the detailed recommendations! The Belfry sounds like a great experience, especially with the limited capacity—I'll look into pre-booking to avoid the wait. The Paris Gate and the art gallery with the Monet exhibition also sound lovely, even if the gallery itself isn't unmissable.

I appreciate the heads-up about the Citadel being closed to the public; it's a shame, but it sounds like there's still plenty to see around it. The Old Stock Exchange and the book stalls sound charming too.

I hadn’t thought about the Charles de Gaulle house or the Somme battlefields—those could be fascinating if time allows.
